I have a 92 ford Festiva with the standard fuel injected engine. When the engine is cold (hasn't run for a couple hours regardless of outside temp) it doesn't want to start unless you pump the gas a couple times or hold the gas down. Idles ok other wise. Any ideas. Thanks

IAC (Idle air control valve) is not doing it's job. Might be because it's bad (unplugged, air hoses cracked or off) or the ecu isn't getting info from the water temp sensor, and that would be the one that talks to the ecu not the one that runs the gauge.Last edited by iceracerdude; 03-11-2012, 10:15 AM.

Computer logic adds extra injections in between the syncronized injections
when you move the throttle while cranking, extra injections vary depending
on throttle motion.
Computer logic removes roughly 80% of the syncronized injections while
cranking if the throttle is held steady past 90% ..wide open. This is called
clear flood mode.

You smell fuel at no other time?
Easy check, find the fuel pressure regulator near the throttle body
unplug the vacuum hose to it and check for any signs of fuel. If none
start the car and make sure no fuel comes out of the nipple on the
fuel pressure regulator.
Next is the injectors themselves. There is a bolt holding the injector
rail at each end of it. Leave the fuel lines hooked up and lift all four
injectors out of the intake port. You might notice a fuel smell or see one
leaking. Turn the key on and back off and look again for fuel, the key
on runs the fuel pump.
One final check if necessary before diving into the computer system.
The evaporative system has a liquid-vapor separator a roll-over vent
valve, a charcoal canister and a purge control valve.
If the system malfunctions it is possible to fill the entire intake system
with fuel vapor. This is easy to check, locate the vacuum solenoid just
inboard of the wiper motor, it probably has red and yellow wires.
unplug the upper vacuum hose and test drive the car for the problem.
