I was coming home from town in the 89 and heard the engine start to clatter a little bit ,the temp gauge was on cold .Dang

I pulled over to find that I had blown off the heater hose from the core. Left the car there and went home and get my trailer and came back for the car (cooled off by now ) Won't start.

Get it home and do compression test. real low 3 and 4 so head gasket time .
new Felpro gasket, get head surfaced ,new water pump ,new cam shaft seal, new belt, new thermostat, new plugs, new heater hoses and clamps ,oil and filter Gottcha, done that .

    NOW
Smokes like a freight train ,puking oil out the breather ,sucking oil up the pcv.

But runs fine ,not missing ,not overheating . Ran it 60 miles with Seafoamed oil/gas hoping to free any stuck rings .

I think that I tempered my rings due to overheating .

So what do you guys think ?

Yep, sounds like you have no ring seal left, or a broken ring, ringlandn etc.. Have you done another compression check since getting it back together?

Ha you should see the blow by from my 323 GT, everytime it builds boost, it'll pressurized the crankcase and puke oil out everywhere, I have the big puddles of oil in the driveway to prove it too lol

But ya, I'd say start with a compression check now that the headwork is done, but I'd guess the rings are shot

Your 323 probably has a broken piston or ring.

I was racing a Lightning on a Mexican freeway when I had my SVO. The car started missing, bad. I let off the throttle, waved to the guy I was running and got off the Mexican freeway.

It died at 2 stoplights, and when I popped the hood to inspect the engine, oil was spraying out of the breather. I lost 3 quarts of oil in less than 3 miles out the breather. The connector on injector #1 backed off the injector, it went lean and broke the side of the piston off between the first ring land and the oil control ring. Sucked.out.loud.

                1989 323 engine

Ok will this engine 1.6l run Ok with the intake and carb in my 89 l on it?
do I need an ecu from a manual trany too?

It is at a j.y. but they say it runs good for $350.00

The 1.3 has oil dripping from the muffler.

I think I mentioned that I did my head once, including having it shaved. The compression from the lapped in valves and shorter deck blew out the oil rings in two cylinders....My $1 - 98 cents

Green Car was shooting the dipstick out when I got her running the first time. Compression test ranged wildly. 185-125-165-100. The 185 was fine, the 125 had chunk behind the compression rings broken off, the 165 had a cracked landing, and the 100 had a large piece of the piston broken (but still in place lol). Re-ring, and put in some good pistons out of other motors, its now 195 across the board. Ran great though, even before the rebuild, just liked puking oil lots!

It amazes me that anyone could break pistons in a stock 1.3L motor (short of dropping a valve)!

It had a rough life before I got it. I was overheated a couple times (according to the PO) and finally they dropped the Aspire motor in it. Overheated it till it soft seized, then they replaced the head. After that they couldn't get it to stay idling. I fixed that by putting the intake hose on correctly (before I bought it even lol). About a week later the guy called me back and said I could have it for $200 off his original asking price. So I took it. First thing I did was test then replace the bad cooling fan relay. But I think that seize before I got it is what did the pistons in.

For some reason, broken pistons appear to be a potential issue on these motors after they rack up a lot of miles. We've had a lot of members lately that have reported such. I have yet to tear my B3 apart, but I would almost guarantee it has a broken piston. Runs like a champ, no smoke out the exhaust, but tons of blow-by and low compression. I've owned it since almost new (<20K miles) and have always given it excellent care. Never overheated since I've owned it...and it now has ~150K miles. I had the head off a couple years ago to extract a siezed spark plug and everything looked like new yet.

there's also the issue of the lack of zink in the newer oils... that acts as a cussion.
