  • Carby guys, Need help.

My carby has it's days where she doesn't start the greatest but overall always runs great. Today I installed some new small rear hatch speakers, leaving the radio playing the whole time. Thought nothing of it and fired her up, only to find out it won't stay running without constant throttle. Even when holding it at a set position it has a "miss" of sorts, has the same slight "chug-miss" in gear. Everything visually looks to be great, no loose hoses, connections or anything. Even thought maybe the battery just got a little low so drove it for about 30 mins to no avail. It drives almost as of it did before, and one other funny thing. When it dies, oNLY the oil and battery dash lights come on? But it never fails to start right back up, I'm thinking jay should be sending me a carb soon? What do you guys think?
    Thanks, kaleb

The battery is only there to start the car and help only if the alternator can't keep up with supplying electricity under severe drain. Time for a tune up.

You really probably would benefit by a fresh Carb from Jay, He knows all the tricks
because these carbs are one of his specialties!!

BUT, it wouldn't be fair to him to expect a carb to fix all your problems when you may
have some tune and maintenance problems that need fixed anyway. Do the usual look over for bad vac hoses, timing issues, water in fuel, plugs, wires and disty stuff.

It is so cool to have cars simple enough to actually work on at home!!

It was almost dark last night when all this was going on, bout to leave for work and I'll have a bunch more time to check it out!! I love being able to work on FI festers. The feedback carby is a little complicated for me to diagnose, so I hope it's just something stupid!!!

I'd clean all the igntion parts - spark plugs, igntion wires, distributor cap, and ignition coil. The check warm idle speed (Haynes says 750) and timing.

i have no tach and i didnt pull the timing cover but i will sometime soon. got it to "IDLE" persay by turning the idle way up. probably around 13-1400 by ear. every vacuum line on the thing looks great, fuel pump looks new, and is pumping great. the car has newer plugs, wires, cap, and rotor so i dont believe the issue lies there. i cant seem to find the sight glass on the festy carb ive heard mentined before, or was i thinking of a weber? i think the the issue lies in the carb itsself because its been having some little "hiccups" for a while, i just live with them!

What is that sensor and where is it located? Oh god of knowledge, please bless me! I don't think it's the carb either I put about 50 miles on the car today.

it's one of the 3 solenoids (orange IIRC) on the fire wall and it controls the idle up diaphram depending on load. there is also a set screw attached to it that pushes on the primary throtle plate. the way to test is with your lights. you don't have to have the air cleaner off but it helps to see what's going on. as you stand outside the car with it running, reach into the car and turn the lights on. you should see a set screw on the ddriver side of the carb move, but you shouldn't hear a change in the idle (100 rpm increase over base idle is acceptable).

you should REALLY invest in a tach for diag like this (a good one).

Check the idle cut solenoid too. Screws in the side of the carb. Black and a white wire in the rectangular connector next to the abcv connector.

you need a DVOM to test its coil, but since that is only used for shutdown, you shouldn't have to worry bout it.
