  • Denso or Bosch O2 sensor?

I recently replaced my O2 sensor with a Bosch universal O2. I see that some folks recommend the Denso O2

What is the difference between Bosch and Denso?

If I replace my new Bosch with a Denso can I expect a MPG increase?

They give different signals to the computer, denso giving better range of signals. I believe the denso warms up and operates more quickly, making the car go into closed loop and achieving better fuel economy sooner.

I'm running a 93 FI B3 engine in a Mazda Miata for a fuel economy project. Every little bit helps.

Immediately after the engine conversion I recorded 39 MPG. The MPG has since dropped to 32 -34.

I replaced The O2 with a Bosch universal and saw no difference in MPG. Perhaps I'll give the Denso unit a try.

Definitely go with the Denso unit.

For max mileage runs, can you just disconnect the O2 sens. and trick the computer with a fixed voltage source?

If so, does the higher or lower voltage in the operating range put the system into closed loop? The "hydrogen guys" do this.

Is the range typically 0.1. to 0.90 volts?

Can a three wire sensor be installed? They have a heater that would get the system into closed loop quicker. Therefore better fuel economy?

^ you can't run a constant voltage to the ECU as a substitute for an o2 signal, it needs to swing. the hydrogen guys bais the voltage from the o2, not replace it.

Thanks. I just read a little about this swing and how to track it with a Fluke88. Too much for me but i was curious. Regarding a Q about an S-10 o2 sens, someone said he would change out the sensor as a maintenance item at 60K.

              Is that true.

I had a Protege 2.0L that burned up the #1 sensor every 40 to 60K. (It has two.) Probably another issue all together but I did replace 2 of 'em during the 185K miles. Gave the car to my grandson anfre a couple hundred miles the chk eng light is on again. Same fault code. He's going to check that sensor.

just like timing belts, o2s have a service life, and just like timing belts, the service intervals are usually ignored. so no, it;s not wrong to replace them periodicaly, especially on older cars.

I just ordered a Denso O2. Should have it on Tuesday. I'll post an update if I see a MPG gain.

I installed the new Denso O2 yesterday and there is definitely a difference.

the gas mileage jumped by 4 MPG.

This tells me BOSCH is junk.

My fuel consumption is well below normal so I will be replacing the O2 sensor tomorrow. Ordered an NGK factory replacement part which comes with the correct plug. I've been advised to stay away from the universal ones. I'll let you know if I see any change in performance and/or fuel consumption.

At Advance Auto the Denso one with the plug is $96; the identical one without the plug, part #234-1000, is like $14. So a minute of splicing will save you $82.

HMMM, this is all very interesting. I have a Bosch sensor in Tweak, and she gets around 30ish if I stay off the happy pedal (which is almost impossible). I check the car often with my wideband though, and the air fuel ratio is almost always right around 14-15:1 when the car is in closed loop, and then when it's in open loop (WOT) it runs pig rich (between 11 and 13:1). I don't see how a Denso sensor would help, because the ECU is maintaining the correct target A/F with the Bosch sensor in closed loop. Maybe the Bosch sensor designed for the Capri actually works.
