have a 91 5 speed efi that revs up fine in nuetral then when u put it in gear and accelerate quickly it begins to sputter and miss but doesnt do it if u slowly accelerate. what could cause this?

I wish I could offer help on this. Every time I see a post on this I follow it. My brother has an aspire that does the same thing. We have tried replacing every thing we can think of to replace in the ignition system and it still does it. Sometimes it wont start when it rains and the sputtering is worse when wet.'89L 110k mi. look for arcing at your coil...Trees aren't kind to me...

Try cleaning the spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and coil with a clean rag. You can also crimp the ends of the ignition wires a bit for tighter contact. Ignition on the festiva is weak. I wipe mine down once or twice a year when a hand held vaccum guage needle vibrates indicating missing.Original owner of silver grey carburetted 1989 Festiva. 105k km as of June 2006. 140k km as of June 2021.Comment

Try this experiment tonight...
Wait until 9:00 pm or latter.
Open hood on car, start engine and keep your eyes on the engine. Specifically the distributor cap and plug wires.
Keep watching the engine and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. After about 3 -5 min you may see a brilliant light show around the plug wires.
Quickly blip the throttle and check for additional spark discharge.
Cheap plug wires can start leaking after 6 months.Comment
