  • trying to replace axle shaft

I hope I didn't make a big oops. Here is a pic of what I am looking at. The shaft doesn't seem to want to slide in far enough.
Do I need to give it a tap with a hammer or did I really scew up.
This is a pic of the drivers side where it goes into the tranny

Make sure the splines are lined up correctly, it should pop right in fairly easy.

Thats what scaring me! It slides in way easy. I had to use a pry bar to pop the old out. I was figuring the new one should be a little harder to go in.

Should the new one like snap into place? I push it in, but it can be pulled right back out.

Is the circlip on the end of the axle working properly? Might need to be spread out if it is too tight, meaning not ''snapping'' in when you slide the axle in. Just throwing out ideas.

if there IS a circlip on the new one, it's usually too far spread apart and makes for a tricky install sometimes.

verify that there IS a circlip, then remove it and slightly compress it and reinstall.
then slide the axle in till it "stops", push the axle in by the outer joint and then smack it with a mallet smartly untill you feel it seat. if all is right, you'll hear it pop into place and you can tug on it and it won't move.

^ that's normal, just remember to put in 2.3qts once you have it all back together.

It looked like the side gear is there in the pic but make sure it didn't fall out of place.

You are fine except use a big rubber hammer or the weight of the knuckle
assembly to pound it home. It should look like the CV almost touches the tranny.
All above is great info, especially the one about adding oil, follow all and it should
click into place, hold oil and perform like a new car.
