  • Optimum Ignition timing on Festiva?

What is the optimum timing for the festiva? I no there is a factory setting exists, but what have people found to be the degree BTDC for best gas mileage?

Last time I tried to do this I couldn't even get a get good position to put the timing light on it. Any tips?

I colored my marks with paint pen yesterday to make them more visible. Not sure about timing to get the best gas mileage, but you would think the factory settings would be the best? Im still waiting to get a tach to adjust my timing properly, but I will be monitoring this post to see what others say.

the best timing is as much as your engine will allow without pinging. set your base timing as normal and then add timing untill pining is heard, then back off 2*.

Depends on what you are willing to pay for gas too. You can increase the ignition timing to the extent that you need premium; this will give you more power, and possibly better gas mileage too. Bear in mind that premium is only about 7% more than regular now, so possibly this might actually save money on gas. Probably you'd just break even tho.

The stock B3 can probably take some additional timing over factory spec without issue. After you adjust it, drive it on the highway in 5th gear with the windows up and listen for spark knock. Every individual engine has its own spark limit, based on carbon build-up, spark plug and injector condition, mileage, etc.. It will first develop under high load/low RPM conditions like acceleration in 5th.

I couldn't even get the timing light on it last time. Any good techniques?

You have to highlight the notch with white paint.

Pull the top of the air filter box and swing the tube out of the way. The VAF must stay on and connected. That'll give you a little extra room.
