  • Rack Question or 3

What lubricate is in a rack? Oil, grease, none? When replacing tie rod boot(bellow), what do You do to clean and Lubricate?

I was going to spray with brake cleaner and then lather with wheel bearing grease. Then put new boots on. Good, bad?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm assuming it's just regular grease in there, but I honestly don't know for sure

FB71, suggested lithium grease to me when I inquired about the same thing.
As he did not find a specified lubricant for the rack.
I think any high quality lubricant will be fine, considering what it has been operating under (no boots and/or lubricant).

It's not going to heat up like the bearings so you would not need the high temperature bearing grease. Ordinary chassis lube grease should do.

I used marine wheel bearing grease.

              I sprayed with lithium grease.

I have learned so much during this suspension rebuild. As many know, I have done halfshaft writeups and do most Festy repairs and swaps myself. Somewhere in the beginning of my rollerskate addiction, I acquired a bad habit, whether through misinformation or just stupidity on my part. I always thought that when the inner tie rod went bad, it required a rack rebuild. I would always just replace the rack with a good one with good inner tie rods and boots. Man, was I ever wrong, causing me a lot of unnecessary work.

Cool thing is I'm learning this bit of info on Levistiva, which I sold a couple weeks ago, and getting paid for the labor! Nice!

I used Wheel Bearing grease. Ran the rack all the way out one way, cleaned it with brake clean and a rag, then the other side. Then back to pack with grease, mounded it up and slowly moved the rack inboard, once in I put the inner boot on and secured with zip ties. Flipped it over (mounted in vise) and did the same to the other side.
