  • Radiator fan won't turn on HELP!!!

My '90 is up and running, but fan won't kick on. Thermoswitch and relay appear to be working fine. Fan is good. I hear the relay click when I touch the wire to the thermoswitch. I disconnected the connector to the fan and used a test light to check for power. The ground side of the circuit seems to be working fine, but no power going to the other terminal. Also I read in my haynes manual that to test for normal fan operation you have to disconnect the thermoswitch and turn the ignition key on. Is that a right? I don't see how the fan could turn on without the thermoswitch to ground the circuit.

The thermoswitch is opposite of your logic. When it's cold, it provides a ground. When it's hot and the fan needs to kick on, it provides no ground. The relay then passes 12v to the fan. You're getting ground at the fan but no 12v so check the fuse. If the fuse is good, check for 12v at the fan relay.

The circuit is fail-safe wired so it's hard to figger out. If the switch or the relay fail the fan will run. But it won't run if the FAN fuse is blown, or the fan is toast or the connector at the fan is corroded (that's what was wrong with mine).

Ok, I'll check and buy some fuses tomorrow. Had to stock up on them anyway. Maybe i'll try one of the smart fuses that walmart sells. The connector at the fan did have some corrosion but scrapped it off.

I cleaned mine but still couldn't get it to work. Had to make a new pigtail to run between male and female. At the fan harness check for 12V with key on. Other pin will be ground when engine hot. Unhook wire at fan sw (on thermostat housing) to simulate hot engine. If good, jump leads straight to fan to check. Top of T is pos.
