  • Help, BP engine noise/rattle

Im new to the festies, but been a mechanic all my life. Just got a BP swapped festy and it has an unusual rattle in the engine near the timing side. kinda almost sounds like a rod but its not consistant. It doesnt do it for the first could of seconds when you start the car, whether you rev it or not. then it just starts rattling at idle. goes away when you accelerate, then it starts again when you sustain speed or when you decel. I might just pull the an and inspect the bottom end. almost like it doesnt start making noise till it gets oil pressure. Help me out guys!!!

Hhhhhmmmmm could his buckets be coming up off the springs a little while the rockers are in motion? I could see this noise happening because of that but not so intermittent.

mechanics stethascopes are awesome! I bet I could pinpoint the source if I had the car!

      Where ya from??

Make sure your water pump pulley bolts are on/tight, I had one loose, sounded like a midget with a hammer (intermittently) tapping with a hammer, then 2 decided to get in there and start pounding, then 3 and I stopped driving the car. Come to find out, 3 of my water pump pulley bolts weren't tight.

My engine rattles a lot at idle, always has. I'm the original owner. I just assume small engines are noisy. It's quiet under load. It passes emissions testing and gets good fuel economy. Compression and timing are good. I did have one issue with #3 exhaust valve not closing due to carbon buildup. Showed up in a compression test and did make a noise. Chemical cleaner fixed it.

Ha well I figured it out! It was the crack pully, bolts came loose on the front the hold it to the hub.
