  • wining near the timing belt with video of the noise

I JUST swapped my aspire engine about 50 miles ago. thought the noise would go away.... but nope. b3-b3 stock engine swap. now I have a high pitched wining noise coming from the timing belt side of the engine. what is wrong? I loosened the alternator belt, tightened the alternator belt.... the water pump is new, timing belt new, alternator belt new. whats the noise? and also will this be a catastrophic failure? I dont want to have to swap in another motor if it fails catastrophicly or something crazy like that.

fyi, I consider myself a newb but I can get things done. I have a standard garage with normal tools and an engine hoist.

so please let me know what the problem is and how it will fail if not fixed. (im going to fix it asap but jusst dont want to be paranoid about driving it ya know?)

    here is the video

IIRC you said it makes the noise with the water pump belt off as well? loosen the timing belt tentioner a touch.

Definitely sounds like the alternator. I had a similar problem when I did my swap, took my alt off and had it tested at a local parts store. The alternator tested fine and did not wine while it was on the test machine so I figured it was belt related. Sure enough, after using a pry bar on the alternator to tighten it up, the noise went away. Also make sure oil didnt somehow get on the belt and cause it to slip, I also currently have that problem. If you think the belt might be contaminated, go to a parts store and pick up a can of belt dressing for 3-5$.

      Edit:

Should have read your post first, I also agree that it could be the timing belt tensioner if the bearing was bad or too tight.

pulley rubbing on the upper timing cover (most get distorted and warped causing this)

took the belt of completely so the alternator is not engaged at all. same noise

(not the alternator belt or alternator)

            step 1:
took the belt of completely so the alternator is not engaged at all. same noise
            step 2:
took off upper timing cover. the whining noise is a bit louder now because the cover is off and the noise seems like it is coming from the lower timing belt area

            conclusion
(not upper timing belt cover, alternator, or alternator belt)

            whats next guys?

Must be the tensioner wheel. Only thing left that spins in that area that would make that kind of noise.

my timing belt is always tight, even if I is loosen the tensioner wheel all the way. I might try to remove it and see what happens, but i wont know how to get it back on with it inside the engine bay

If you take it off try to spin it by hand and feel for any resistance. The bearing is most likely shot.

Like Festyboy said your timing belt is to tight. If it is new, make sure it has
the right kind of cogs, square with square or round with round..

there is no resistance... but the noise went away after removal

                        festyboy guessed it right!

speako-ray-tooth!, I took it off and now the sound is gone! we found it! (the timing belt is on so sight that it doesnt need a tensioner for the moment)

now how am I going to get a new tensioner back on!? haha, looks like im just going to have to try real hard for that one.

                        CONCLUSION: TIMING BELT TENSIONER SQUEALING

                        BIG THANKS!

                          CONCLUSION: TIMING BELT TENSIONER SQUEALING

im going crazy... i stabbed myself accidentlly with a screw driving trying to install the new one...
now how do I install the timing belt tensioner without removing the engine? seems to me I either have to drill a hole in my car to access it or remove the engine again

how do I install the new timing belt tensioner?

If the belt is tight without a tensioner you must have the wrong belt. If you take off the water pump pulley you should be able to install the tensioner. I've done it a couple of times.
