I'm not going to try and explain this process. I don't want anyone to try it and then cuss me out for not being able to reassemble these little buggers.
Most of the really hard ones I've seen just need a good cleaning and new grease though. *I've only actually seen four that were broken.

Reminds me of fixing the recoil on a Brigs and Stratton.
The one on the left I replace today, obvious it should look like the one on the right.
