Well, I was helping the girlfriend last night with her late 90's Mercury Mystique 2.5 V6. She got the dreaded P0401 error, so I undid her EGR valve, throttle body assembly and all the other stuff attached to the upper intake manifold, pulled it out of there, and started cleaning the crud out of the EGR passageway in the manifold. Man, that thing was dirty. Also I noticed the little green vacuum hose coming off the EGR valve had been snapped in two and repaired with electrical tape. She said her dad broke it a month back so I plan on fixing that. I have a feeling that is what threw the code, but I figured I'd clean out the EGR passageway anyhow, just to be nice.
Once I got it off, I cleaned it out with throttle body cleaner and let it air dry for a bit. When I picked her up from work and brought her back to my place (where her car was) I proceeded to put it back together and made sure all the connections were connected and no hoses were broken. But, however, it was late and the Advance Auto stores were closed so I wasn't able to replace the intake manifold gasket, throttle body gasket, or EGR gasket (yes, I know, brilliant... :nono
Well, it smoked and sputtered from the leftover cleaner a bit, but after that passed through, it drove pretty much normally on the way home last night, according to my girlfriend.
However, before she had work today, upon starting up she noticed the engine surging and occasionally dying. Boy, do I feel like a dummy disgust
I tried the Mystique/Contour forums, but it looks like they rarely have any activity. It sounds like a vacuum leak of some kind. Any idea of what the issue could be, or do you think I hit the nail on the head with the gasket assumption?
Thanks guys
