Ah, the famous Hyundai evap problem. My 2002 Accent was the devil about it. What happens is that the charcoal canister, located inside a 1 ft by 1ft black "box" assembly located behind the driver side rear wheel, fails and spreads charcoal bits throughout said box. This will make the check engine light come on since it's affecting the fuel system, and make the filling the car up with gas a pain since it kicks the pump off after every few cents, along with making your car smell like gasoline all the time. A pain, but liveable.
Unfortunately, the charcoal bits sometimes like to get lodged in the small hoses running out of the charcoal canister assembly, most likely putting a restriction on the flow. Usually on other cars, this is a common consequence for trying to fit in "...just two more gallons" of gas. However, this is a VERY common problem with Hyundais regardless and most people put small pieces of wire mesh where the hoses run off of the charcoal canister assembly as a makeshift filter instead of buying the pricey charcoal canister. However, it seems that you are in the later stages.
What you need to do is:
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable (dur..)
2. Disconnect all of the hoses coming out of the charcoal canister assembly. If clogged, either clean out with something long and skinny or discard and get new ones. Clean the metal lines they are attached to also just to be safe. Do NOT leave any left.
3. Remove the charcoal canister assembly. Just a few bolts holding it in. No biggie. Notice the charcoal pellets falling out of the hose attachment. This is an obvious sign that your charcoal canister is shot.
Okay, now you have two options:
4(a). You go to Hyundai for the charcoal canister (canister only, they don't sell the whole box assembly), remove the old one from the box assembly and CLEAN THOSE PELLETS OUT. They will know very well what part you are looking for. They quoted me $172 (in Conway, AR) for the part...grrrrr... Too expensive for me, but probably the safest option.
OR...
4(b). Bring your old canister assembly (for identification reassurance) to to the local junkyard and yank a whole assembly out of one there. I don't know about Elantras but I had to go to two or three junk yards with four or five Accents each before I found a decent, non-shot assembly. Make sure it doesn't spill out pellets or anything. Mesh on the hoses can be suspicious too. I got a whole assembly for about $25.
5. Put on the new charcoal canister or used assembly box
6. Put on new or your cleaned out used hoses and hook the battery back up. The check engine light should stay off
Like I said, biting the bullet and getting the new canister itself is probably a better choice, since the assembly I got lasted about a month before spewing pellets. I sold it to buy another Festiva lol.
But maybe you will be more fortunate. Hope this helps and good luckLast edited by sickfleming; 07-11-2012, 11:03 PM.- 1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L 141,240 mi (Traded...wish I hadn't)
