  • Is this axle in all the way?

I have put the axles in my mtx, and like a dummy, I didnt take note, of how far in they were in, before I pulled the axles.
This was my first axle work on a Festiva, but the axles dont appear to me to be far enough in the tranny. I just wanna verify, whether or not the axles need to go in a little further, or if they are good where they are.
I didnt want to try to hard to get them in further, until I was sure if they needed to be in further.

    Thanks!

Here are pics of the axles as they are now.

Come daylight, I'll snap some pics of the originals. That might help to answer this question.

That drivers side looks like it MIGHT be a little too far out, but don;t take my word for it!

When you feel the circlip click into place, it is in all the way

Ha ha...the circlip! :p Such a fun little guy.

I just found a pic of an axle in the haynes manual, page 7A, fig 6.15. Shows the axle almost exactly like mine, about 1/4 - 5/16 inch away from the housing.

I think they both clicked into place. Pulling on them they didnt want to come back out.
Ive read some threads about that seal, and it was said to not drive the seal in all way, to help it seal on the shaft.
I did drive them all the way down
Even if the axles are where they are supposed to be, I hope it dont leak.
Still looks like a lot of axle showing in my pics of the axles to me.

Looking at pics at my axle below, the sealing suface of the old seal can be seen (the black ring). That is quite a ways down the shaft. I think I may be good to go. I'll keep a bucket handy! :p

Yeah, I vote go for it, with a very clean pan underneath at first. Then, no harm, no foul, and you KNOW!

Just a little piece of advice for the next time, if you rotate the clip open side down before inserting it into the diff, the use a rubber deadblow hammer on the end to snap it all the way in. When toy rotate the clip it falls down into the grove instead of hanging down out the bottom.
Im not driving a Festiva because I'm poor. I drive a Festiva because i want to!

The sun finally came up over here by KC.

I can't get the camera on the subject well at all.

I'd put it on ramps, but my new battery has been drained by a short.

I'm try to recharge the battery now.

I'd say go ahead and put the knuckles on. See if there's any resistance getting the control arms to align with the knuckles. I don't know what the shafts could have bottomed out on, inside the differential?

I'll check back later today. Summon the inner Hillbilly!

It does look to me like the axel isn't fully seated, because you can still see the shiny part that the old seal rode on that didn't develop years of surface rust and pitts. I don't think its a problem though. From what I've noticed, most seals are only supposed to be driven in flush with the outside of whatever housing theyre installed in.

The question is, is the axel going to come out of the transmission on its own? And, Will the seal hold oil in?

Axels will have 1/8" (ish) play in the diff carrier before the circlip catches, so push and pull on it really hard a few times to make sure it won't come out easy, you should feel the circlip catching and the axel bottoming out. Normal driving probably won't pull the axel out, or let it slip out, but if you put the struts through their full range of motion and turn the knuckle, it would stretch the axel out a bit and possibly let the splines pop out of the transmission, which is why the circlip is there. You will tear a cv joint apart before the axel stub comes out of the transmission if you pull on the outter splines, I've done it.

The only thing I would really be concerned about is the seal, as long as the axel doesn't come out when you pull it, and there's really only one way to tell wether the seal is good or not.

Dont worry too much about beating on the axels with a rubber mallet, if you break something inside the transmission it needed fixed anyway.
