Grounding STI

I was going to check the timing on my 1990 and hen grounding the STI connecter nothing appears to happen. Shouldn't I notice something as soon as I ground it?

The timing light should show a little retard from where it was, if it does not
check your wire, make sure you have the right one. Check your tps and make sure
the idle switch is closed. make sure your idle rpm is close..given those the ecm
should let you adjust by retarding the timing when you ground the sti.
