I think it needs some cleaning I've got 145000mi on my festy and lately it's been acting very weak and hesitates under load ..... I pulled the cat and I can see right through it .... the only thing I can think of is the egr... The entire ignition system is new except the coil.... I'm lost!

They do not have one. None of Mazda B series engines do. Be sure to add your location in the "user cp" area, someone may close enough to offer assistance.

Your fuel pump may well be on it's last legs and not generating enough pressure. A good automotive garage ought to be able to test for this. Pump is inside the tank under 2 metal lids/covers and under the back seat. Not a big ordeal to get at if you're prepared to slit the carpet.

"Slitting" the carpet is NOT necessary.
There are tabs/fasteners of some kind holding the carpet down in the truck/boot area which can be release to gain access to the interior hatch through which you can remove the pump/sender assembly.

This is true but they always break off if/when I start playing with them.

The 88's and some 89's have carburetted engines with EGR valves.
See photos of cleaning one here http://www.photobucket.com/festiva-egr

                  Check the fuel filter.
it is near the brake master cylinder.
Make sure nothing slipped in the timing area, disty and T belt.
