  • 88 festiva running rough

    I have a 88 festiva 270k, 5 speed
It began running real rough a couple days ago on freeway and hesitating horribly. Undriveable in 5th and 4th gear but I limped home in 3rd at high rpm. Car isn't the healthiest thing in general and I've checked all the basics. Just wanted to see if anyone can point me in the right direction possibly. I did plugs and wires recently, just replaced fuel filter and starting reading resistance in some sensors with meter but not sure on proper readings I should find. any ideas? Thanks!

        Please describe "running rough" symptoms.

The cars have weak ignitions so cleaning wires, plugs, distributor cap, and coil often clears up missfiring. Checking vaccum hoses for leaks is another common practice on the old feedback carubrettor engines. Cleaning the carburettor with cleaner in the spray can can help. I usualy clean the PCV adn EGR vavles although I don't know fi they would contribute to "running rough". General engine cleaning and tuneup 1-2 times a year can do wonders.

          1. You're supposed to put your location. 2. I'm a vulture for carbed Festivas.

It's not the law to put your location in your profile!
It just makes it easier for everyone if you have it.
It usually phrased as a request, not a demand!

Besides, even if he did say to come get it, I suspect it would end-up being "too far"!

SEAFOAM! Half a can in the carb, half a can dumped in the gas! Follow the instructions on the can. Make sure your neighbors aren't home, because it's going to SMOKE! And like it says on the can, when you take it for a ride "DRIVE AGRESSIVELY!" You will be AMAZED at what that stuff can do!

This is a bit off topic but I graduated from Richard Montgomery HS, Rockville, MD.
I wasn't referring to the state but the lack of a municipality.
I appreciated the irony when I posted it.

wow, way to be off topic guys!!! good job.

as for the running rough except for high RPM, look at your coil... load test it. it's easier to fire an engine at higher RPM (lower load). also vac test the intake and hoses. a vaccum gauge is your best friend here, you should have one (read: get one.)
