  • No Spark.

    Need help brainstorming.

Did the B6 swap, and have been having a ton of issues getting the intake stuff I bought to hold a seal.

I finally had it, or so I thought, and was reaching for the hood prop to shut the hood, and go for a test drive, when BLAM. The engine just shut off. Turned out to be no spark.

Quickly, I tried a different coil, and dizzy. Checked the wires to the dizzy, all good. Coil and dizzy also worked in a different car.

So, I plan on swapping out the ECU, and ignition switch. What else might it be?

what about the ignition control module? Is it next to the coil like on the B3?

Check timing belt by removing disty cap and see if the rotor is turning when cranking the engine. If it aint turnin', belt is gone.

The module in the disty went out on me yesterday (88 carb), did the same thing. I carry a spare disty, so I just changed it. Later models have the module outside the disty.

Check both module and timing belt.

Before going through the hassle of swapping the ign sw, I would run 12V straight to the coil + side.

Must check, knew I was missing something! I haven't changed anything on the ignition system, except for the dizzy, new wires, rotor, and cap.

D'oh! I need to be more succinct when I post these! At the moment, the TB cover is already off, since this is my first cobble together, I didn't put the spit shine polished up put together on her. Not a bad thought though, but already checked, even made sure it hadn't jumped, in line perfectly.

The dizzy worked in another car I had standing by, plus I swapped in the one that came from my old B3, known good. The later models, from what I can find, have a CPS next to a gear on the crank, which this one lacks. The dizzy between the B3 and this B6 appear identical, and the B6 one worked on the B3 I put it on to run it.

Will check module. Updates after I work until 4AM tonight.

Hey! That would save some time! Thanks! I was planning on just unplugging the ign sw, and plugging in a known good one I have laying around, but that is simpler. Too much on my mind, this brainstorming will pay off!

Keep them coming guys! I am about to go to bed, then I work 6PM till 4AM. Just got done putting a water pump in Little Blue Car as well, so I have had a lot on my plate, and that always makes it easier to miss things...

Thanks! So far I have two votes for ICM, I think that will be my first thing to check.

Kind of frustrating, since the stuff I bought for the intake fab turned out to be so shoddy, but kind of lucky as well. I would have been driving out and about when this happened otherwise!

Paul, go after the ICM, DO NOT put 12v straight to the coil, nothing will happen. the ICM controls the coil ground circuit, and it's a typical fail point usually due to cooking itself from lack of thermal paste.

FINALLY had the energy to go out, and swap the ICM. Put mine into a running Festy. All of a sudden, that car had no spark, I wonder why? LOL.

So, yeah, it was the ICM.

Since this is Sunday, that was pretty active for the day. I will get one into Baby Car Monday, and fab a new intake.....

Thank you very much guys! I needed that brainstorm, I was completely skipping over the ICM, and that was the problem!
