  • Crank pulley question

I have to replace the front crank seal in my daughter's car and have got as far as removing the crank bolt. That's out and now I hab
ve to get the pulley off the crank. Haynes manual simply says "slide the pulley off the crank". My responce to that is "yeah, right!"

I've attempted to pry it off with no success. Any suggestions?

The engine is still in the car.

    Thanks

tap it around the rim with a hammer, lightly enough not to ding it, should slide off. make sure the keyway is fine..not twisted out of place or anything. somethings just seized..

You removed the large bolt, but did you remove the 4 smaller bolts holding the pullies to the hub?

All the pulleys, spacers etc have been removed. All thats left is the timing belt sprocket/crank pulley thingie.

I'll be back at it in the morning as the car has to back on the road by Friday morning.

I had that problem but I left the pulleys and spacers in.I lowered the engine down and worked in the wheel well. I used both hands and wiggled it up,down, side to side.At first I didn't feel any movement but it did slide off after a bit .You just got to hold your mouth right .Good Luck try some pb or wd that sprayed on crank may help too.

Ian, those can be a pain. I bent 2 old flat head screwdrivers 90* so i could pry at both sides at once.

You might be able to get the sqaure key out and it'll make room to get spray lube in there.

When you remove it and go to put everything back, whatever you do, do not mix up the timing cover bolts with the pulley bolts. They will bottom out and snap off. This is why my swap is not running, I've been lazy to pull engine and ez out them, but they are so small I might be sol..

Here's the scoop on sprockets/pulleys. Some come off easy. Some dont.
Some can get so stuck, you can break them by prying on it , especially if you pry on the outer edge of it.

My B3, you could pull the crank pulley off with you're fingers. Not so with the B6 I transplanted into the Festy. :nono: It was STUCK!

This is THE tool to use to remove that stubborn pulley.

A steering wheel puller such as this one, available at any McParts store's Loan-a-tool. (I kept it)

Be sure to pick up the same size bolts as the holes in the pulley, a bit longer, to bolt the steering wheel puller to the crank pulley

A small chip in the timing belt guide part of the pulley will not hurt the timing belt.

Just don't do it twice , go get that little puller, that puller is pretty much worthless
for steering wheels and dampers, the only thing I use one for is this.

Thanks to everyone for your input. Before I packed it in last night I sprayed a liberal amount of "Releasall" on the pulley. With some carefully administered leverage this afternoon the reluctant pulley finally released its grip on the crank.

Everything is back together and running and my daughter is happy to get her wheels back.

All in all I'd have to say it's been a good day... so far

Is this vehicle a Festiva? Usually you don't have to remove the crank bolt but you do on my late '93 and probably all Aspires.

Not on all of them. Just did one on my friends car, and it has a smaller bolt head. Goes right through the pulley.

                              EDIT!

To get the sprocket off, yes. Missed that somehow, was just thinking pulley. Sigh.:eeeeeek:
