  • I'm going to attack it with a hammer.

So I have a 92 Festiva that has been sitting for a while. Fuel pump went out. rigged up an escort pump to work and it ran fine to drive home (although it did require some stopping to unplug and dump the fuel filter) now it wont start and run. it will turn over, when i disconnect the filter and turn it over, I do see fuel being pumped in, but the car dies almost immediately. On the little box with 3 jumper wires (egi, head, and something else( the egi wire dried up and broke so i backyard rigged it before i drove the car. Not sure if that is of significance. i am honestly running out of idead. does the tank have to be sealed tight? help!

Excuse the lack of grammar or puntuation. I am intelligent despite the impression I may be giving...in a hurry and typing on my phone

Starts and dies off right away? As in a second or two? Try the connection at the VAF, which is the sensor plug in on top of the air filter.

That "wire" you backyarded is actually a fusible link and should be replaced with a 40 AMP, (IIRC) fuse with "long legs." Give that a shot before anything else, I bet you are burning through it....

Welcome to the forum, but don't take a hammer to it! Be sure to add your location on your profile, there may be a member near you who can help.

And plan on coming to the largest Festiva meet in the nation, Festiva Madness VI! First Saturday of every October....We are shooting for a hundred cars this year!

      Welcome to the site!

Suggest you add your location to your profile, there are people here who will actually drive out and help you, if it isnt halfway across the country!

The little box - get rid of the 3 wires! Replace with fuses, that are available at any parts store. Use at least 20 amp on the outsides, and 30 amp in the middle. 20-30-20. Much better, and cheap! Some have used 30-40-30 in the box. The fuses are maybe 1/2 inch x 5/8 x 1/2 high, and have prongs on them, that plug into where the wires plugged.
Be sure to try and clean the box terminals as best you can. I used a small copper brush from a gun cleaning kit, to brush up the terminals, and blew them out with air.

You may have issues with your TPS or VAF sensors too. Some times a good cleaning of those will cure the problem.

EDIT: SCITZZ kinda beat me to it. :p

        Ooooooooooh.

I kept melting the 30's I had in my glove box when I managed to blow the 40. Somehow, I didn't have a spare. Blew 4 30's in a 7 mile drive....ended up using a piece of amp wire to limp home, and that was smoking like crazy!

My right foot? I dunno, I don't have AC, or an amp, or even a powerful stereo, but on a 40 I am fine and dandy. Every setup I have seen has been 30 40 30. I would suggest 30 40 30 every time. If I am not mistaken, that is also the ratings on the fusible links, but don't quote me on that before I look it up!

Oh, and they are cartridge fuses that fit with no mods, with the long legs.

But you should'nt be blowing fuses like that. Prolly a short somewhere.
Knock on wood, so far, I havent ever blown one of those fuses....and I prolly just jinxed myself!

Yeah, I had a short. And a moron! I replaced, in the parking lot at work, my clutch cable. When I went inside, my "friend" thought he would help me, and reroute my wiring harness from the back side of my engine under my clutch cable. :nono: So, a few hours later, I rubbed through, burned up part of my harness, and blew the fuse. Spent a couple hours tracking down all the burn throughs, and wrapped them in tape, and limped home. Put in a fusible link from a parts car when I got there.

A few days later, got a new wiring harness, and tossed a spare 30 in, blew it as I pulled into Advance Auto, and bought a 40. Using the same one now 3 years later. I am gonna go with 30 40 30

Close, one that I had run in the car years before for a large amplifier. Amp is gone, wiring is still there. I cut a small piece off to use.
