same way you test for an '88 festy... lol. there are 2 "grounds" on a coil, one for the primary and one for the secondary winding. you first grab your handy DVOM (multi-meter) and test for continutiy at the harness plug. you should see about 6 ohms. then you test from the coil tower to each of the pins. one should read "OL" or infinity, the other shold read about 6k ohms. if you see something on BOTH pins, you have a bad coil. if your ranges are very far off the listed ranges, you have a bad coil.Trees aren't kind to me...

Second test that I developed after finding two "good" coils that failed this test. Spray the hose at it while the car is running at night. If you see a light show it's bad, if your car stumbles it may be bad, if the stumble doesn't go away quickly then it's going bad, if your car dies when water is sprayed on the coil, it's bad. With age the insulating properties of the coil break down. Even though the internal windings of the coil are still good, they may be able to arc out when there is enough moisture present. Sometimes even humid air will cause the coil to arc out. This will also show you if your plug wires are bad, but beware of spraying a hot engine with cold water, it could warp or crack engine components.
Hope this helps.Last edited by Advancedynamix; 09-11-2012, 12:22 AM.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege.
