The seals are different part #s. Replace those and you'll be good to go.
I drove mine home from the track one night( 70 miles) with no fluid. I actually broke the whole trans in half. The starter bracket was the only thing holding it together, and it made it.-Greg

Well, bad news... When I removed the passenger side cv axle from the tranny, a piece of the little ring at the end of the shaft fell on the ground next to me. That means the smaller piece might still be in the tranny. Drained the fluid but not sure if it's out. Any ideas besides getting one of those extend-o-magnets?
Also, sad as it may be, when I drained the tranny fluid, I noticed it was slightly glittery. I guess I should start looking for another transmission in the future huh? Shame since it had really low miles for it's age.
Oh, and do they make a tool for putting the seal on straight? I tried to use a socket and a piece of PVC , but with little luck.
Advice? Ideas? Anyone?- 1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L 141,240 mi (Traded...wish I hadn't)

So, is there a special way to install the transmission seal? I assume with a socket, but unfortunately i don't have one big enough.
Also, are small amounts of glittery metal shavings a complete death sentence? I'm just asking since i assume some of you guys are riding around with less than perfect transmissions.
Hopefully you guys can help me out of this pickle- 1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L 141,240 mi (Traded...wish I hadn't)
