  • NO BRAKES! HELP!

This morning, I replaced the passengers side rear wheel cylinder. It wasn't hard to replace it. I got in, pumped the brakes, checked the fluid, and made sure it was up to the line.

I got in to go for a ride, and I have VERY little to NO BRAKES! I checked in the back, and it's not leaking anywhere. Can somebody please help me out with ideas? This is my DD!

Sounds like you have air in the line. Did you bleed the brake system after installing the cylinder?

It really helps (ie faster) to have one person pump the brakes while another bleeds them but when I'm by myself I attach a snug fit length of clear plastic hose on to whatever brake is being done. Air bubbles are then apparent and if the looped hose ends in a can or bottle you don't lose any fluid and backflow doesn't let air back in through the bleeder screws.
Start at the brake furthest away from the master cylinder, if you're doing the whole works.

The new cylinder is full of air. You might be able to just do that wheel. I attach a clear plastic hose to the open bleeder and hook it to the spring so it points upward. I sit there and watch the hose fill with fluid. When there is no more bubbles I get someone to push the brake pedal (valve closed). I crack it open and closed looking for bubbles. When there are no more bubbles your done.

Why you gotta hate? I've done a B6T swap, I've done quite literally almost you can do to a Festiva, (All by myself) yet somehow I have never bled the brakes. I now am completely confident in my brake bleeding abilities.

Hardest part is getting the bleeder valves loose without breaking them off! Stick a wrench on it and use another big wrench to tap it clockwise(tightening) before you try to loosen it..weird but it works! I don't know how Utah Is as far as rust goes, might not even be ncessary

Utah is TERRIBLE for rust. Some how my little car is almost completely rust free. The bleeder valve wasn't an issue though, as the main one that had the issue was the wheel cylinder that I had just replaced.
