  • No start 89 EFI auto

Car sat for four years. Seller added about half a tank of premium and the car started. He let it run for a bit then shut it off. Started OK again the following day. Went to pick it up and it wouldn't start. Has spark, changed the fuel filter, still no start. I'm assuming the fuel pump may be clogged. Any other ideas? What triggers the fuel pump on?

    Thanks

The door in the VAF can be pushed in manually and you should hear the fuel pump come on, as long as the key is in the "run" position.

I'd try to see if you can get it to come on.

Also Ian, with the key on and the distributor cap off turn the rotor and listen for injectors to click.

Or take an old plug from an old harness and a 9v battery and power them individually to see if they click

        Just a simple test

Being it's EFI I would also check the inertia switch in the back. My '89 used to pull the "no start" stunt. Push the reset and it would start.

Got tired of that so I made a jumper wire and bypassed it.

2 separate circuits will make the fuel pump relay energize. A pigtail from the start circuit energizes one FP relay pull down (engine cranking) and a switch in the VAF closes when there is airflow (engine running) to energize another pull down. To bypass the VAF switch and have pump running whenever key is on, jump fuel pump test connector.

The no start moniker no longer applies

Removed the intake piping and then, with the ignition on, mobed the VAF door back and forh and after three or four "wiggles" the fuel pump kicked in. Put everything back togethet and the car started right up.

Now for a little clean up and light bulbs!

              Thanks for the help team.

Good to hear! If you get problems with the pump let me know, I've got a spare.

                  YEAH!

Recently, during my B6 swap, a fuel pump Ok Dokied me. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not, so I missed that I needed to replace it for almost a week. Keep a close eye on that feller, it MIGHT be the culprit after all!
