  • b6t distributer disassembly.

I have a B6t dizzy that seems to be leaking oil internally. I want to fix it and I'm pretty confident I can take it apart and get it back together, but I was just wondering if anyone has done it before? I've had plenty of them down to the housing and shaft, but removing the shaft seems to require drilling out the rivet that holds the locator/drive clip thing. Any tips or tricks out there?

Are these dizzies similar or identical to Festy implements? The reason I ask is that sometimes it's better to experiment on a worthless, dead or surplus part than a (aside from leaking) perfectly usable item. I do know they don't 'give these things (dizzies) away' at parts stores.

I've dis-assembled a B6T dist. before but only for the electronics, I've never pulled the shaft out and stripped it to the bare casing

      1988 323 Station Wagon - KLG4 swapped
      1988 323 GT - B6T Powered
2008 Ford Escape - Rollover Survivor

1990 Festiva - First Ever Completed KLZE swap (SOLD)

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

        Is the shaft loose.

Bert , I assume the design is similar to a Festiva dissie but I have half a dozen bad b6t dissies to experiment with, and 2 good festiva dissies.

Chris, yeah I've done that too. I pull the advance mechanisms apart and clean and lube them once and awhile. I think the peened rivet needs to be drilled out to pull the shaft.

Karl, this one has no freeplay. I think what ever seal is inside is dried up or damaged somehow. I haven't had one apart to see what is in there and it's not serviceable according to the manual. Guess I'll have to write a new manual. Lol.

              Thanks Matt.
That PDF isn't showing up on my phone so I'll have to look at it on my computer tonight.

Is it leaking oil on the inside or the outside? Most likely it's leaking on the outside and running down the outside of the engine block. This is usually caused by a hard brittle broken "O" ring on the shaft that inserts itself into the block and connects to the cam shaft. The "O" is a standard size and if you have a "O" kit you should have it on hand.

The pic above is now all cleaned up. Another indication of a leaking "O" is that you're always adding a little oil.

A new manual is always a good thing, just remember plenty of pic's is always good, good luck with the Dizzy rebuild. The seal is probably brittle and cracked.

boydg1, the external ring is practically new, but you are right about that being a common leak spot on these engines. This is an inside job. Good thing is that if I can master rebuilding these then I'll never run out of spares. Lol. Then watch, I'll swap over to coil packs knowing me. Haha.

Let us known then what is leaking when you find it. The dizzy above has 483,000 miles on it and that is the first NEW "O" it has had. And now there are NO leaks.
                      .

                        .
That seal will last just about forever, up to the point where you have to remove the dizzy or touch it for one reason or another. Then the floodgates open, lol

Charlie, if you figure it out please post some pics. My distributor is leaking a bit out the electrical connector - going to need an overhaul soon too. I should probably just throw the CAS and MS on it though, heh.

There is a large RING bearing inside of the dizzy. I just wonder if what you are seeing is the grease from that?

Yep, pretty sure the grease on that bearing is white lithium grease

No, this is oil piddling on my tranny and running down the edge of the bell housing kinda leak. I keep my engine very sanitary, so I can see exactly where it's coming from. Just like Matt, it's coming out of the connector and the drain hole in the bottom of the dissie. I have 3 of them that do the same thing, and all three have barely any play (I have 4 more with loose outer bushings). Been collecting them for awhile. JT sent me this one and it didn't leak for a few thousand miles, but now it's just like the others, bad case of the drip. Lol ( side note, JT went above and beyond to get me a nice distributor and I'm not at all displeased).
