  • Gearbox Oil & Idle Issue

Hi there everyone im from Australia

    I have a 1989 Mazda 121 DA, 5 Speed Manual with Aircon.

I have two issues, my gearbox likes to crunch into second, i know this car hasn't had its gearbox oil changed for a LONG time. I was wondering what gearbox oil does this car take? Ill be splashing out on some Nulon G70 for some protection on the synchros as well.

    ALSO.

My Idle when warm is high, not extremely high but sounds a bit gay when im in drive thrus etc lol (Just like it a bit quieter). How would i go about change the idle speed?

Just for a bit of background.

I've changed the sparkplugs, fuel filter, air filter, engine oil and filter and the timing belt and waterpump.

OH! and has anyone put a chrome open air filter on their carby? lol

    Any help would be appreciated!

My 93 came with gear oul in it, but later, Ford changed the recommendation to ATF. The idea was that ATF was thinner, and got into the small spaces better, but I think the gear oil made for a quieter and smoother shift. However, I went ATF quite a few years ago.

Yup. Dexron/Mercon. Been running it for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles.

You can also use Mobile 1 Euro blend to get a nice thin fluid with plenty of anti wear additives while getting more lubrication than the ATF will provide.

The Ford spec stuff has tested better in transmissions that I know of having severe issues with eating diff pins and which were spec'ed to have Chrysler ATF+4 in them, but the Mobile 1 is better still.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

You can adjust the idle with the plastic screw on the pass side rear of carb. I don't think there is any way to use anything but the boat anchor factory air filter.

You can put a different air filter on. Different places sell a VAF adapter that then allows you to put a cone filter on, or a hose for extension...Links to come, probably after 3AM EST though.

The Mazda 121 may not have had ATF spec'd as the replacement fluid like Ford did here in the states. ATF works, but it doesn't really provide the proper friction for synchros like gear oil does. I would check out Redline MTL or maybe try some Synchromesh. They will provide extra wear protection for the gears as well as the optimum friction for the synchros. It's not like you have to deal with sub-zero temps (I don't think).

surely someone has changed their gearbox oil or could tell me the weight required

Blech. I can NEVER think of these cars as carbed, and I have two in my care that are carbed!

I THINK I uses 80w90 when I used gear oil. I used ATF on my last 5 speed for over 130K, and it had over 100K on it when I bought it, actually, IIRC, it had a 190K since it came from the same car that my last B3 came from.

Some jerk drained my fluid to sabotage me on that one. Then, I used ATF for about 100K in an ancient 4speed that had unknown mileage before that. That 4spd just came out for another 5speed, but behaved GREAT and will be a backup. It had remnants of ATF when I got it.

                      ATF works just fine.

Gear oil also worked fine for me.

I think it is more a matter of personal preference on noise and feel than anything else.

I used to use ATF, but changed it to 80w90... i don't know, it sounds and shifts smother. but i believe is a personal choice, both work!

does the later rounder shape festiva have the same gearbox as it would more likely show up as what oil to use

I believe the Aspire (later, rounded Pride/Festiva) had the same transmission, although the final drive was different. I'm just throwing this out there from what I've read - I'm the furthest thing from an expert. :p

So I'm assuming it'd be the same..?
