Searched but hard to find this specific symptom. Hope I can get help for my 89 festiva 5spd

Was on my way in to work in 4th gear, engine starts free reving ... Great

Coast to a side street and try to get moving (tried all the gears, no luck). I can feel the clutch grabbing, car tries to move but there is a grinding noise.

Towed the car home, tried adjusting the cable in and out, same problem

Anyone know where I should start looking? Almost feels like an axle "got pulled out" of the tranny

I 100% agree with your diagnosis. Same thing happened on one of my aspires, and the CV axle had sheered off at the inside boot. Lucky for you, once you get it home, you can get a lifetime guarantee reman'd CV axle for $57, and they aren't very hard to change. Good luck!
