  • Help! Outer Rear Bearing.

GRRR!!! Getting really tired of the little stuff kicking my butt. On the way to work this morning there was a little hum, then the hum turned to metal sounding terribleness.

Looks like the out bearing is toast. Can't get the drum off. It's not prying off, pulling off. Any ideas?

Try bolting the wheel back on, but only about 3 threads into the drum, then push the wheel up against the drum while kneeling on the ground infront of it and yank it towards you. Make sure you have it blocked up properly, you don't want to yank the car down on you. Basically your using the wheel and studs as a big slide hammer.

Speaking from experience... don't forget to make sure your e-brake is off.

E-brake was off. I am so very sad right now. I yanked, pulled, slide hammered, and grunted for solid hours. I'm using this Festy as my DD right now, so I couldn't risk it not being done today. That is right... ANOTHER MAN'S HANDS ARE ON MY FESTIVA RIGHT NOW. I'm going to pay another man $70 + parts to man handle my baby. I'm so ashamed right now.

I mean technically I have a nice Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix) in the driveway, but who wants to drive that, when the Festiva is an option?

Sometimes the spindle will seize onto the hub via the bearing and both end up having to be replaced.

I would try pulling the rollers out one at a time with needle-nosed pliers. Then you would have a couple inches of ram to pop off the seized race.

I'd try to figure out what is holding the wheel on and what is not. If the wheel turns on the spindle then it's kind of hard to imagine what's holding it on. Maybe the bearing cage has expanded and is catching on something? If so a hammer and punch (or nail) and pliers might get what's left of the cage out. Looking at the photo again suggests lifting on the drum while pulling might help.

The application of massive amounts of heat. Happened to me twice in 19 years, and even happened to a car at Madness three, I was there to help get it towed back to Dean's. You have to remove the strut from the back side, take off the four spindle mounting nuts, and then knock the entire thing off(The bolts are splined.) Then you replace the spindle and the drum, but the spindle is a junkyard part. Or find a friend on some internet forum that has one...

I was able one time to torch the drum off without harming the spindle. The other time, a buddy cut the spindle while torching the drum. YMMV
