  • Engine stalling at stops

    I am having a issue with my 91 5-speed.

When I am about to come to a stop, after I step on the clutch the engine sometimes slows down to 200-300rpm, sometimes it recovers but most of the time it stalls. Today I had it stall three times in less than a quarter mile.

Any clue what could be wrong?

It idles properly when cold, it revs to 1100-1200rpms till warm where it returns to around 700-800rpms. Idles just fine when cold or hot, doesn't idle rough, doesn't surge either.

TPS, or possible the IAC...also, just check the idle! Set the screw to the curb idle speed listed on the hood, and see how she goes. Check the TPS to make sure it is right. You can pour an ounce of MMO into the pipe for the IAC and leave it overnight as well...

yes, but I drove it quite a bit today and it didn't stall at all, didn't even bog down. So I don't know guess it was just a fluke.

keep an eye/ear on it, you may have a failing throwout bearing. just something to watch for.

                Noted.

Certainly hope it isn't the throwout bearing, but don't those normally make grinding and rattling sounds?

Haven't heard anything like that yet, only out of the norm sound I hear is a slight squeak when the car has been sitting out in the cold all night, but goes away as soon as I give the throttle a little tap.

Sounds like you have a classic TO bearing failure. The only time the TO bearing "Works" is when the pedal is pushed. If that bearing is shot it will put a load on the engine, giving you the symptom you have. I'm surprised your not feeling a engine "Shudder" when this happens.

Drove it a bit today and still not having any problems, did hear a slight squeak at a stoplight. But I am betting on it being a belt, I haven't changed either belt since obtaining the car.

Is it true that the B3 is a non-interference engine?
