  • Fusible links

Getting ready for a 160 mile round trip in my Festiva yesterday when doing a pre-flight check noticed my headlights not working.
Checked a bunch of stuff and found the headlight relay bad, but also the fusible links just crumbled when I went to test them.
Anyone know a good alternative to the links? Maybe some fuses that could be wired in?

They sell cartridge fuses, you need the ones with "long legs" to fit. They go, by amp, 30-40-30. Or, Pink, green, pink.

      That was fast.
I guess I'm not understanding how to wire a cartridge fuse in, there must be something better than a cartridge fuse.

Yeah, I quite literally did this swap out an hour or so ago. I had to run out to the car anyway, so snagged a cell pic. My leatherman ruler is on the left, a long legged cartridge is in the middle, and a short leg is on the right for comparison. A junk yard should have plenty of Mazdas around with the long leg ones, free for the picking....

Awesome, that makes sense now Thanks

Did a Google search and found they are listed as "PAL" Fuses

While your in there do a thorough job of cleaning the spades, the wifes steel finger nail file works good or do a full resto as per nitrofarm.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

How interesting, my sweet old 93 had been jury rigged with in line fuses before I got it, all 30 amp fuses. I wonder if the chargeing system fuse should be a 40 amp?

I blew that main once, and tried using a 30 amp fusible link to nurse it home, no joy. Tried a 30 amp cartridge, no love. Wedged a 40amp short leg in there, and rode about 7 months on it. Turned out I needed a new wire in my harness for charging.

Good call on cleaning the tabs by sc72. I was about to go to bed, and forgot to mention it.

Have you tried 15-25-15? The wiring diagrams on here and on Mitchell On Demands repair diagram, they show the fuseable links were 15-25-15.

And a Ford TSR upped that to 25-35-25, but I've run the readily available 30-40-30 on all my cars for approaching a decade.
