  • Trans troubles

Trying to replace trans on a aspire. I have everything disconnected and it will slide about an inch off and that's it. Shook the living crap out of it. I've done them before but this one is being dumb.

There's still up to 3 bolts with 10mm heads remaining. Without those removed, the "sandwich plate" is still attached to the trans, but trapped under the flywheel.
You need to remove all three of those bolts. The sandwich plate is only removed after the trans, then the pressure plate, clutch, and finally the flywheel are removed.

So then the sandwich plate is staying flat against the engine, not the flywheel, and certainly not trying to follow the trans off?
Are both the trans and motor out of the car, or is this with the motor still in the car? I'm assuming the shifter and stabilizer bar have been long ago disconnected, along with both the engine to trans brackets.
Well then there's nothing else left to hold it on except if the throwout bearing somehow got horribly jammed and/or the trans is just missalinged to the point of binding.
Cycle the clutch arm and see if that pushes it the rest of the way off. Pry around the trans evenly with a smallish pry bar to detect where the real resistance is coming from.
I've seen guys actually wear a throwout bearing through several clutch fingers before finally getting around to replacing parts. I mean leaving completely broken off and crazy bent clutch fingers. Believe me getting the trans off is easy, putting one back on is either easy, or hard, It's never medium...and by hard I mean there's usually a lot of dancing involved trying to get that alingnment perfected.
Whenever I pull one, once you get past the length (about a 1/2") of the 2 alignment pins there's really nothing left to cause friction!?

I know I have done multiple I got it. I ended up unbolting the pressure plate in the car. It turns out the pilot bearing was seized onto the input shaft. Someone probably forgot to grease it when replacing a clutch.

Bigger hammer/ pry bar? Is the throwout bearing hung up? Try pushing the clutch lever to release it.
