  • NOT-Festiva, '86 Sprint won't accelerate.

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, or the wrong website lol.

I've been DDing the racecar back and forth to work (my second job), 35 miles each way. I haven't had any issues, and I even got to track my MPG last week with a GPS, getting 42MPG driving it fairly hard..

Anyway.. all was fine and dandy until yesterday (with one other incident a few days prior). I recently had the alternator belt replaced (two or three weeks?), as I haven't had time to do it myself. It was squealing like a pig before, and stopped after the replacement (I assume it was the alt. belt, as it stopped squealing if you turned all lights/fan motors off, so it might have been something else??). The belt looked pretty old..

Yesterday morning, I went to start her up. Turned over.. try again, turn over.. finally started on the fourth try. This is a one-turn, 1-second car, even in 20F weather (full tank of gas). I was like alright... I'll let it warm up a bit. About 10min later, I flipped it in reverse, and started to head off. Starts squealing LOUD. Louder than before. I go ahead and move, as it stopped before after a little moving.. but I can barely get out of the drive.. I get to the stop sign, wait there a second, then pull out in first. I get to 2k RPM and let go of the clutch. Chug chug. No acceleration. I shift to second, chug chug dies. I start it up again, get to the side of the road (rolling), and try again.. nothing. Got it home at 3-5MPH, jumped in the Festiva, was late for work by 10minutes.. :nightmare:

This did happen once before (and seriously almost killed me) when I pulled out into traffic. I thought it was my own clutching mistake or something, but now realize it wasn't me. I flipped it into second and it was fine after that, for the next 500ish miles.

Only thing I've had time to do yet was take off the fuel filter, blow it out, check for any deposits in there, put it back on. Still squeals and absolutely no acceleration. Barely made it around the block.. Fuel filter has been ordered, either way.

I won't even have time to pop the hood until Saturday, but any possible fixes or anything at all is helpful. All plug wires are on tight, oil is fine, clutch works well, engine idles.. a little off, like 100RPM low, but sounds fine just idling. Fuel pressure is at 3 (has a fuel pressure gauge under hood), though I don't know if that's normal or not. I can hear the pump running.

Could this be so simple as the alternator belt being too tight? The lights don't flicker or anything.. Coil? Carb? Vacuum leak (though there are so few vacuum anythings, the carb is pretty much the only breather left)?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Joe

I would definitely sign up with a Metro forum. I only hope the place is as info-rich as this one is.

Truth be told, the responding members that I've seen didn't seem as nice as you guys, so I thought I'd try here first.

But thank you for the suggestion, I'll probably sign up there at some point.

Sounds like it may be the bearing in your pulley. I have had similar things happen on other vehicles. Putting the new belt on tight, making it worse, would also make sense if that is the case.

^^^ could be right on, take the belt off and see if it runs okay. Do not run it more than a few minutes .

i'm with gabe on this one, if the belt is tight and the alt is locked up, that's alot of drag/load on the engine...

The Metro alternator belt tends to squeal if not adjusted right. I replace my alt belt at least once a year. You could have other issues that are making the belt squeal, but the proper adjustment makes a difference. If you let the belt squeal too long the surface will burn and the belt will never take an adjustment.

Severe loss of engine performance can sometimes be a sticky or stuck fuel pressure regulator in the throttle body. My XFi had a bad regulator and would only run part throttle. I drove it like that for two years before I fixed it.

                Good luck!

                  UPDATE:

Finally got around to the poor gal. Sorry it took so long (it's been cold!!). Shoveled a foot of snow off 'er. Replaced fuel filter and loosened the belt. Sprayed carb cleaner everywhere, didn't change idle at all.

Let it warm up, and I mean WARM UP for like 25 minutes. It finally registered some temp, and slowly rose to about 160F. I tried it out, and it ran just peachy. No issues, no nuttin'.

Went out a few hours later, after it cooled off. Attempted to drive it cold.. lol. Chug. Chug. Barely moved. So I guess my new, now-known issue is it won't run cold. Belt didn't squeal when it was warmed up, but it screamed when it was cold.

                  So to sum it up:

                  Runs fine FULLY WARMED.

                  Won't run cold. At all.

I have no real experience with carbs... would this be a possibility with a Holley Carb? Or something else entirely? Next step is a full tune-up, new everything but a motor. :p

Thank you everyone for your replies, too.

Choke sticking or not getting heat, choke vacuum pull not working , vacuum advance leaking and stiff cold, not working when cold.

Carb heat not working and carb is icing..

Just a few things to check right off..

                      ....and it's alive.

I finally figured it out - though I still don't know what the single issue was.

The bad thermostat I had replaced.... I replaced with another bad one, it seems. Found out that's why it wouldn't warm up.. I ripped it out and put in the best one Advance had, and it warms up in under 10 minutes in 25-degree weather.

Replaced a clogged fuel line, fuel filter, and ran some SeaFoam through the carb intake.

Tightened the belt a LOT TIGHTER. I didn't realize a belt would squeal when loose, not tight... atleast I learned that now.

Took it for a test drive 50 miles round-trip. Kept a steady 175-180F at 60MPH. No acceleration issues. No anything!

                      THANK YOU ALL!

Kind of embarrassed it took me so long, but I've barely been sleeping lol. Will be nice to have two cars again.. my mom was getting pretty ticked off not having a vehicle. banana time

If the belt is too tight it can kill the alt. bearings.
