  • Axle Seal??

My tranny has been pissing out fluid, and upon further inspection it seems to be coming out of the driver side axle, which I just replaced a few months ago. Is there a seal or something that goes into the tranny that might be bad? Does anybody know what's wrong or have a diagram of where the axle enters the transmission? Hopefully I will be driving my Festiva again after what has seemed like forever....

Thanks to all for your help,
    Karl.

there is a seal that can be replaced...just like when you do bearings. If you did not replace it when you did the axle ,that is probably all that is wrong.

Yes, there is a seal. Do a search. I believe there is a different part number for each side.

This is what my seal looked like before I changed it.

VERY IMPORTANT: Be sure to only pull out only one transaxle at a time, so that the gear doesn't drop down inside the transmission.

My seals were the same on both sides, the parts store look up was wrong too.
Make sure you have transportation or buy two sets just in case.
If I remember right it was the cheaper of the two that my trans used on both sides.

Does anyone know what the Ford part numbers are?
I have something that looks like the part number, but I am not sure.
E8BZ-1177-B. If it is the right part, there are 37 of them in stock at Green Sales Company.

I already replaced the part. I would've given you the part number had I remembered to take it :bull_head:

I also wanted to take a picture of how bad the bearing was but today was garbage day, and of course forgot to take it out

                  Re: Axle Seal??

Yeah with any lip seal that sees a lot of oil you should swap them every time it comes apart. Even more important when you change whatever shaft it seals against. The surfaces wear together the same way a bearing and it's race do.

Uh oh... you mean to tell me my 93L uses the same seal on both sides?

That explains the driver side output shaft seal I got from RockAuto looks different. Oops. Guess I get to no-receipt return these and get the right ones..

                    EDIT:

Parts store shows the same thing. The 2007N I got looks similar but RA says it's for the right on an auto. AND AutoZone says the 2007N is for an auto. What Timken seals do I iactually need?!

Since it's been bumped already I should add that it's not THAT big of a deal to have both axles out at once. You'd have to try really hard for the differential gears to come apart on you.

The 5-Speed I put in my car was shipped half way across the country (UPS even) with no axles in it and it was just fine.

I'm showing a part number of E7GZ-1177-E however crossing that number over on rockauto comes up as an SKF20205 which is described as a "dust seal" and the picture doesn't look right so I'm not 100% on this. The picture for the 2007N seal looks correct and both sides should use the same seal. This is of course assuming you have an automatic transmission.

For this particular job do not trust anybody to come up with the right numbers for both sides. You may get lucky but either pull the old and match them up or buy all possibilities. It is kind of tough trying to return a seal that was installed but didn't fit !

Rock Auto lists the Timken 2007N as the correct seal for both sides of auto trannies for both the Festy and Aspire.

For manual trannies, they list the 2007N for the right side, and 223543 for the left side. Oddly, National has the same part # for both sides, 710396.

If you compare the 2007N next to the 223543 you can see one is @ 1/8 taller(meaning its gonna contact the axel a little better imo). I've had problems with the "Universal" style national seal. Just my two cents
