Is it normal to have a lot of play in the shifter?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The bushings I got (the ones listed above) were sold individually, and I bought two and replaced the ones in the shifter. It fit just fine (with a tiny bit of coaxing), and now it's significantly tighter than it used to be (though still not completely tight like I thought it would make it).

Also, are there other places that need bushings replaced to make it even tighter?

My original Festiva's shift was sloppy as a 3 year old with a piece of cake, but this new Festiva I just bought was tight. The difference was astonishing and I just about couldn't drive the new Festiva with the good shifter because I was so used to the sloppy shifter. I actually missed some gears because of it

Didn't we answer this same question a few days ago? SEARCH for skimsucka's thread in the "Repair Help Forum", "Shifter sloppiness solved!! no Austrailia nonsense". He has all the Mazda part #'s & amounts you need to do a complete job. Jeeze, that thread should be sticked!!
If it don't fit, use a bigger hammer!

I thought you drove an auto? In any case new bushings (tell Carling Mazda they're for a 93 323) and get shoulder bolts and new bushings and suddenly you'll think you're driving a new car. My mom's Festy was not abused and does not have high miles but the shifter had become so sloppy when I had a look that I had to make new mounts and have them welded and drill entirely new holes, plus install new bushings.
