  • Aspire ATX to MTX swap

Anyone have a "Good" documented "Tutorial" on this.I'm doing this on my 1994 right now and the wiring is fun. I'm sure many of you know that they didn't use a "Universal" wire harness. The ATX & MTX harness's are completely different. So you are an electrical "Engineer" at this point. Just wondering how others have tackled this task. If you know of a thread please post a link. But please don't show me the FESTIVA ATX to MTX swap, I've already been there. Thanks !

alright, so I took the plunge on this project. I just got back from the jy with a manual trans from a 97 aspire. I believe all I have left to get is:

    hope it helps

I want it wired like factory as opposed to getting it to start/run. He did a great job don't get me wrong,he's just missing some circuitry. Also I'm not planning/wanting on "Pulling" wires through through the firewall. I'm gonna keep plugging away at my schematics and decide what my plan is. Thanks again purg3d.

Maybe I missed something but are you using your original wiring and computer ?
Print off your wiring diagram and one for the auto, hand draw the switches on your
wiring diagram then draw in the wires. You should have some un-used wires in your loom
        already.

Yes you missed that,I'm planning on "Recycling" the old wires so I don't have to thread new.......But thanks for responding. Happy New Year Marvin!

So after really looking close at this install http://fordaspire.fr.yuku.com/topic/...al-swap?page=2 I see three flaws. First he is using the neutral position switch from the MTX to route current to the starter solenoid. I'm not certain but I doubt the switch is rated for that amperage.Secondly the PCM wont see a unloaded idle with just the clutch depressed. So sitting at a stop light with the car in 1st the PCM will think the car is coasting.Lastly this swap wont let you "Bump Start" your car. The ONLY way you would be able to start your car is if its in neutral (cant bump start in neutral). Also if you car died when pulling away from a stop. You will be forced to put car in neutral before getting power to the starter solenoid. Like I said before he did a good job,but I know I can do better. But its not gonna be nearly as easy as he made it seem.
Well I'm back to looking at my schematics. I'm close to going out and looking at the car just want to get everything on paper before I start attempting it.Measure twice, cut once.

This is what I have so far,if someone can explain why the PCM needs the #4 wire added for GRD on the MTX only please speak up(its not on the ATX PCM).I'm guessing the ATX is getting Grd through #3 on the instrument cluster. The first scan is just so I could get my head wrapped around where all the wires went.:banghead:Its not drawn correct as far as where the splices would be (as far as the firewall would be concerned). The ATX wiring is on top & the MTX is on bottom. The second page is my new wiring creation. I'll only have to add one small gauge wire through the firewall. Just dont know if its gonna work, but I'm done staring at schematics. Its close enough to where I feel confident I wont smoke stuff when I apply power banana time.Sometimes you just gotta go for it! Wish me luck! Any thoughtfull input would be appreciated!

Made progress last night, also compared my drawing with what is on the car.Found I had one color code wrong,so Im ready to start splicing. But want to wait till I figure out why the MTX PCM needs to have a ground added like I mentioned above.

I have to admire your persistence. For the hell of it I disassembled an auto Festy just to see how easy/difficult a swap might be and I wasn't long abandoning the idea.

Desperate Men do desperate things. This car is also getting a Festy tranny with custom X Member that'll allow me to rotate the tranny forward & down @ 1-1/2".Also the PO butchered the Main Battery cables,so I'll be upgrading the power supply/Ground system with heavier gauge cable.

I rotated mine backward and down to equalize the cv angles and to allow one aspire axle and one festiva axle to work length wise..just happened to be the combo to make it all work with the stretched lower control arms.

Watch your inner cv stroke, you will be raising the inner cv position by rotating forward and to test this jack the front up and get full extension your cv may be too long . Geometry !!

edit, jack lower control arm until suspension is compressed to where cv is straight across. Make sure cv is long enough, it may try to disengage from the trans and make a mess in the middle of main street, usually at an intersection as turning requires even more cv length...

Here's the schematic I drew up & will post pics if anyone wants them. Thomas-
