How can you tell if a rack is good?

I need to replace the steering rack. I have several used ones laying around. All have broken boots.

How can I tell if a rack off a car needs rebuilding or can be cleaned up and used?

On the passenger side the shaft that slides out when you turn the rack, grab it and check for play.

I got a rebuilt rack for a 88 if you want to buy it PM me.

He he he he... you are looking for a nice rack...

But seriously... put a straight edge on the body to make sure it is not warped. Would not hurt to check for cracks too. Only way I can think would be with a weld inspection kit.
