  • No 4th or 5th gear

    Hi all.

Been happily enjoying my Festy all Summer and Fall, slipping Bahnhoff (P.O.S.) clutch and all. Parked it for a few weeks, but then started driving it again. The other day, I was just cruising down the highway at around 65 -70 MPH when all of a sudden, no 5th gear. No noise, just nothing. Like it went into neutral. Downshifted into 4th and heard a little high frequency whine, but the car moved fine. 5 miles later, no 4th gear.

Managed to limp home in 3rd. When I got home, I checked the trans fluid. There was none. I topped it off and took it for a short test run. It shifts fine 1st through 3rd, but still no 4th or 5th. Reverse is fine. The shifter feels normal shifting into 4th and 5th, there is just no gear there.

Parked it after a few minutes and haven't touched it since.

Any ideas what the problem could be? The linkage is fine as far as I can tell and the axles are seated in correctly. I did notice that the passenger axle seal was leaking (explains the lack of fluid), but things seem normal otherwise.

About a month after the clutch change, it made a screeching sound like a bad bearing. I immediately changed the fluid and that went away totally. It's been fine otherwise.

I try not to abuse the transmission, especially after swapping the B8 in and I can shift like a pro, so I don't think it's abuse-related.

About the only thing I can think of at this point is perhaps the linkage is out of adjustment. The bushings are one of the few things I haven't replaced.

I would really like to drive this thing 'til Spring, when I'll have a chance to swap transmissions (I work outside).

drain out the fluid you just put in, I'll bet there's plenty of metal in it. Sounds like you ground the teeth off of those two gears. They don't share a syncro or shift fork, so it's unlikely to be anything simple.

So what your saying is he will likely need a "new to JPT" or a rebuilt tranny.

JPT, what tranny are you running with the B8?

Like Jim said, it is now.

I was hoping it was something simple. Well, now it looks like it's time for that Kia Rio 5 speed I was planning on installing.

Quick question. I have an F-series flywheel (came with the B8 ), will it work with a Rio box?

My tranny just lost 4th a couple weeks ago. Then today I lost 5th...though not entirely and reverse went out! Good thing 5th and reverse was lost on my way to/from picking up another tranny!

That sounds like what happened to me. First I lost fifth, just felt like neutral. Then, I lost them all. The shift gate plate (or some name to that effect) had cracked and thus left the tranny stuck in neutral.

According to this post by shadetree, it's kind of like a hybrid F/G-series, but takes an F-series clutch and flywheel.

I believe he used the Rio flywheel, which is why I ask if an F-series flywheel will work.

Drove my car again yesterday. Nothing has changed, but shifting into 4th or 5th does feel slightly different than the other gears. I'm now wondering if something might be stuck, but it could be like Jim said, no teeth left on the gears.
