  • Fuel Sending Unit Problems?

For a few months now I've been trying to work on my 89 Festiva to get it running again. Time after time I keep getting stuck on what's wrong, and what's next. I replaced my fuel pump, but I think the sending unit may have crapped out, but I'm not sure. It'll start up for a few seconds, but it doesn't stay running. If anyone could help me figure this out I'd be much appreciative.

Sending unit operates the fuel gauge!! Has nothing to do with fuel delivery.

Why would you think that has anything to do with the fuel sending unit, which sends a signal to the fuel gauge to indicate how much fuel you have.

How about checking the VAF connector.
If it isn't attached well, it will act the way you have described.
Starts up, but only runs about 3 to 5 seconds.

Make sure your VAF (vane air flow) is plugged in. Don't touch the screws on that connector, just use a small screwdriver to push the metal clips out of the way and pull the connector. If you want, you can rub everything down with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip.

The VAF controls your fuel pump. If no air is entering the engine, the pump doesn't run. Disconnect the air hose and push on the vane/flapper while trying to start.

Alright, thanks for the tips! I have to check that out tomorrow, and hopefully that'll be the problem. I'm still pretty green to fixing cars, but this helps a lot.
