  • Stripped rear lugs. Upgrade time!

    Hey guys.

The lugnuts on our festiva didn't torque last time we put the wheels on (I suspect they are stripped).
Looking to replace the rear hubs, hopefully with something better/stronger.

The other issue we have, is that the set of wheels on the car now are lug-centric. AKA the lugs take all the shear force from the wheel, and I'm concerned this may lead to failure.

Since we plan to AutoX in the near future, it'd be nice to either get a set of hubs that properly fit the wheels, or a set of adapter plates.

    Suggestions?

-90 festiva - surf blue (undetermined destiny) wanna keep but wifey says noooooooo

I suppose you could take an M12x1.5 die to them if you really wanted to, but the threads could be weaker or compromised overall. Are you wanting to re-tap the hubs also? That's an option too I guess. I also did aftermarket studs with lug nuts... forged, economical, and high quality. They make wheel swapping 100 times easier for sure. Total cost under $50 including some thread-locker.

run a tap thru them, use loc-tite on some studs and run those in up to the collars. Problem solved.

Orrr....if the holes are stripped beyond useable, you could buy press in studs (like most vehicles have).

Find the proper size drill bit, drill out the lug bolt holes, and install the press in studs.

This WILL require the removal of the drum to install the studs from the back, in case you didn't know.

            Hope this helps.

We have a budget to replace all of the suspension, and are looking to put disk brakes on the front so a complete change up (instead of repair) to the back could also be done. Not sure where aftermarket parts can be found for a festiva though.

Re: Stripped rear lugs. Upgrade time!

Seems to me that the easiest solution would be to replace the brake drums. That's what the lug bolts screw into... there is no separate hub.

They are m12x1.5. I believe that studs I installed on mine are 2" long. It also depends on the type lugnuts you use. My 90 has open lug nuts and my 93 uses closed lugnuts. Open meaning that the stud sticks out through the lugnut.

                        Mine are 45mm. 2" would be 50.8mm.

I found Aaron's how-to post. Ordered up the ones he suggested a bit ago.

I might as well just get press-in studs as everyone has suggested.

Want to share this info here? About to order a set of studs, and want to confirm the size/length.

Look at post # 7. If I find the length, I'll post it. I think they're 1.5 inch. I know mine work with the long, closed acorn lug nuts.
