  • Nissan quest

I'm looking for advice from all the wise guys here.

The family hauler is a 1998 Nissan quest. It is the 3.0 L V6. It has a four speed automatic transmission. It currently has 192,000 miles on it.
I got it for free with 155,000 miles on it. It had body damage when I got it and I threw $800 at that including paint.

In 2010 we threw some decent money at it for a full tuneup, tires, windshield, fuel pump, down pipe, and I think that's about it.

    Low book now is $2100.

Here's where I am now. It needs the following things.
    1. Axles
    2. Exhaust leaks at the manifold
    3. It's never had a timing belt and it is an interference engine
    4. The float in the brake master cylinder has stopped floating and It is losing brake fluid somewhere. I haven't located that yet.
    5. It smells like gas outside the van often. Sometimes it smells like gas inside the van after a fill up.
    6. Due to the exhaust leak I have to run the heat on recirculate or else exhaust gets in the passenger compartment. This means I can't run defrost at least while sitting still. What ends up happening is I have to run the defrost to clear the windshield and as long as I'm moving it's fine, but when I stop all the sudden it starts smelling like exhaust then i remember to switch it to recirculate. That's unsafe for my family and irritating to me.
    7. Drivers side window switch sticks.
    8. It has a minor oil leak. Occasionally when parked on a hill it will drip on the exhaust and smell like burnt oil. I have seen it leaking from the valve cover gasket. I would guess that's all it is.
    9. When my fuel pump was changed I guess they bent the arm on the float sensor because the gas gauge reads incorrectly now. I've run out of gas twice because of it.
    10. The switch messed up night before last.
    11. It really needs the radiator flushed.
    12. It's leaking power steering fluid I think. It got low recently and I topped it off anyway.

The good things about this van are the following.

    1. It runs fantastic. It always starts, runs and drives. It gives me no strange engine noises.
    2. The transmission shifts perfectly.
    3. The interior looks near perfect. Seats have no wear.
    4. It suits our needs just great.
    5. It's very comfortable.

    Here's some other pertinent information.
I've seen several with over 300,000 miles. Everybody I've talked to who owns one loves it.

This generation ran from 93 to 98.
The next-generation ran from 98 to 02 I believe. That run is reputedly just as durable. But it also has a driver side sliding door. It also has a 3.3 L engine.

Here's the rub. I'm tempted to throw almost as much money at it as it is worth. I kind of want to see how many miles I can get out of it. It's been really good to us.

I'm also tempted to find somebody with a 99 to 02 model that has around 100,000 miles on it. Those are selling around here for about four grand.

I would then sell this van for whatever I can get out of it. I would fully disclose everything it needs.

    I'm looking for input.

Well I tend to think go with something newer...but you never know how honest the person selling to you is...so there may be hidden things wrong with it. At least with yours you know it runs well and you know exactly what it needs. At the same time you could find someone you really trust selling one or like I usually do with cars I purchase I'll ask if I can have my local shop or a shop I've been suggested to take it to give it the once over for $30-50. Doesn't hurt to have it looked at. Could save you big bucks on purchasing a car for more than it's worth and can help expose problems that could maybe help you talk the seller down on price.

Considering that I've owned my Festiva for almost 23 yrs and my Dakota for almost 12, I'd say keep it and fix it. But thats me. You already know this van and you might get one that looks better but is in worse shape mechanically.

dump 1500.00 in it & dont worry about the value or what its supposed to be worth, if you sell it and buy another you will not know what you are getting. treat it like a well loved festy! dont ride kids with exhaust leak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          Re: Nissan quest

First things first, fix that exhaust leak. You won't sell it for what you want if you don't, and like you mentioned, it's getting into the van. Honestly the issues you have with this van sound like general maintenance to me, so the likelihood that you'll have to do these things to the new van could be just as high. I agree with those who have suggested you keep the one you have. My suggestion is to a, join the corresponding forum if you haven't, and b, ask as many local owners who repairs theirs, and see who the man is for the job.

I would definitely take it to a garage after I gave it a good crawl. As I always say I'm a mediocre mechanic at best. But I can inspect one well.

Mine actually looks really good other than one rust spot at the bottom of the sliding door. And being pretty boring. lol!

Best so far. What my gut is telling me anyway. And the exhaust doesn't get in anymore.

There is none. I searched when I got it. Maybe a general nissan forum. But there is no quest forum. Drivers of these are strictly driving for utilitarian purposes. Except this guy!

That's kind of a tough one to answer Paul because it really depends on how much you love this van versus that "new car" bug and can usually cause many a sleepless night

Ultimately you have decide what it is you truly want, to see this project through or start fresh with something different. At the end of the day it really boils down to which model you like the best and if you are going to constantly ask yourself "what if?" if you compromise. Personally, I tend to be the type of person who is not satisfied with compromises when it comes to cars so I've found it easier to be patient until I find what I'm really looking for. You may be different so that part rests solely on you.

Here are a few things I typically think about when faced with this dilemma:

                              • If you love the car like a cherished member of the family and plan on driving it until the wheels fall off then you can't really think about the cost. I wouldn't extend that courtesy to something that is constantly breaking down, keeping your wallet thin and your blood pressure high, but you get the idea. I hate to think how much I've got in my first Festy and I'll never get it back out of it. But it was number 1 so she has a special place and gets special treatment
                              • If you decide you want to sell...sell it right then and don't pour any more money into it. That's money best spent on the new project, give the new owner the list of things that you would have fixed if you had kept it.
                              • If you decide to keep what you have you can at least rest assured that you know what you've got, the repair history, and what needs to be fixed. A new [used] car will come with a new set of problems that you will have to iron out. Although stepping up to a new model should shorten the list somewhat (but not always..depending on how the car was driven and maintained).
                              • Try to refrain from branching out too much on Craigslist. If you keep looking at the buffet you can get into a situation where you totally confuse yourself as to what it is you really want. When I wanted a Mazda B series truck I went on Craigslist and limited myself to only 5th generation B2000's and B2200's. I could have looked up newer ones and threw in Ford Rangers too but that just muddies the water. If you have a pretty good idea of what you're looking for it's easier to keep it simple.

                              Hope this helps
