  • head or block?

    Long story short. 91 GL coolant leak near water pump. Tried new water pump, no fix. New head and intake gaskets, no fix.

    Used to be my car but gave it to mom. She said car quit and smelled really hot. Radiator was empty. I filled it and saw leaking. Cant tell where it is from. Dont know if leaking caused overheating or bad gasket (head reworked last March) caused leak. Either way same problem. Car runs fine, just gotta keep distance short due to leakage.

    What is most likely scenario, cracked block or cracked/warped head? I do not know what else to do. I just scrapped ALL of the of the extra Parts cars and parts so i dont have any extra parts. DOLT!!!

    Need this car running again since it is way more reliable than her 01 Galant POS! Lol

    P.S. John, i still have a really nice wing on top of my cabinets. I think it is growing roots. Maybe if my problen is the head and you have one and you need a whole NIB set of Excel G/GR2's we can have a little swap meet.

    Get some UV coolant dye and a blacklight. That will let you pinpoint the leak and you'll have to go from there. But if it's overheated to the point of shutting down and "smelling hot", you know have to consider what damage was done there too.

      I would look for another motor. Or a short block.

        If the leak is near the waterpump check the metal pipe that bolts to the block on the front side under the exhaust manifold.
        Already seen one guy go through everything you have just to find it was leaking from that pipe to block gasket.
