Sometimes the simplest things are overlooked.
Been following this thread but don't remember if this has been mentioned.
Has it been determined that there is a good ground connection from chassis to the engine?

No I have not checked that , that is next on the list .
Can you save me from searching where is a engine chassis ground on a 89 festiva..

OK...If your starter is operating normally, I don't see how the engine could not be grounded.
Look at your negative battery cable connections (to the chassis then to the transmission).
You may also have a ground on the right side of the engine near the motor mount and attached to the head or where the motor mount bolts to the engine.

When you checked for a spark with the plug out where on the engine did you touch the base of the plug?
The surest way to test for a ground is to check for voltage on a voltmeter between your positive battery terminal and a bare spot on the engine.

99.9 percent sure this is probably not your problem but electricity does strange things sometimes.

Hopefully Festyboy will get to the bottom of this for you...he appears to be one of the people here with lots of knowledge in this area.

all the grounds seem to be fine, i checked for spark with a in-line spark plug tester and got no spark.thanks for that site will try this is the morning (If there is no spark at the spark plug, disconnect the main lead from the ignition coil to the distributor cap and connect a spark tester in series with the coil wire. Crank the vehicle and check the tester for spark to the distributor.)

Nice looking...I owned a dark red 89 automatic for about a year back in 2007. Bought it from a junk yard for $175, rebuilt the head, drove it about a year
then gave it to my sister. She kept it about a year and sold it.

Hope we help you find the problem soon.

I am still learning too. Maybe somebody can chime in as to what sensor trips the spark and where it is.

The one that gave me trouble was a crank position sensor above the bell housing on a 94 Jeep.

Found some info on a crank position sensor on a 91.

Disconnect 3 wire connector from the distributor and measure resistance between the yellow/blue wire and ground. Should be 210-250 ohms. If not, replace.

Ok update, previous owner said sometimes he would have to wiggle around key in ignition to get it to start or sometimes just keep trying. So just now i took apart the steering column to get to the ignition and on doing so i touch these wires from the ignition and the horn started beeping but very low and keep doing so every time i tapped the wires the beep is a very low beep because when i pressed the horn it went very loud. here is a video of the wires that is causes this. Now im really confused http://youtu.be/OKcqPknW2yg

will this ignition switch cause my engine not to receive spark because i am getting 12v to the coil harness. Could this be a problem between the key ignition switch to the coil is this why i am not getting any spark?

You have probably searched the internet and found most of the problem solving sights like this..but here's another on that explains things pretty well.
