Oil has been changed. New Air Flow Meter installed. Still have the choc milk looking stuff up at the top of the crank case. All up into the PCV and PCV hose. Car is running like crap at idle. I need some help guys. The only other thing I would think is that I might have a coolant leak (head gasket).

** Anyone done a head gasket job on a Festiva? 0-10 Level of work (0=changing oil to 10=full ground up rebuild)? Also what is the average hour time to do this?

Did you do a compression test? If so have you gone through all the ignition system? If you did have a blown head gasket usually you will be smoking white smoke out the tail pipe, or you would see it on your dipstick.

Check your air hose connections. If it's letting in unmetered air, the engine will be running lean and stutter. Could be a problem with the VAF (vane air flow :meter internally or at the plug as well.

Don't know how to do nor do I have the equipment/ tools to do a compression test. I keep checking the dip stick and it looks just fine. No smoking out the tail pipe at all. I haven't gone through all the vaccum hoses yet. Will be tomorrow morning.

VAF: Vane Air Flow. It's the oddly shaped aluminum box that sits on top of the air filter. it controls the running of the fuel pump and meters the amount of air going into the engine. the "milkshake" may take some time to go away, but that won't happen untill you get that engine hot and keep it that way for a while.

also, please tell us where you're located, we may be able to send a more knowledgable member your way to help.

Ok, You are talking about the Air Flow Meter right? I just replaced that yesterday afternoon. I have narrowed down the studdering at idle and start of acceleration to a vacuum leak or the Idle Control Valve is sticking (which can be taken out and cleaned with carb cleaner.). I am located in Thomasville NC right outside of High Point. It's raining/snowing and cold here this morning and I don't have a garage/car port to work in/under. So if it slows up I'll start by looking at any air leaks around the Air Flow Meter and all vacum lines. I do know that the hose from the ALM to the intake has a crack in the bottem of it, which might be my problem with the ALM not being able to mesure that air causing the air/flue ratio to get off.

if that hose is cracked, that's you issue right there... seal that leak and you should solve your problem.

Sealed the crack, Problem solved! Car running good all up until more of the exhaust gasket blew out. Just picked that up this morning. Then I should be smooth sailing!
