  • Nervous twitch when coasting!

My Festiva showed me something new today, well it actually started yesterday. When driving down the road, when you let off the gas, there is sometimes a jerk to the right. Similar to a brake pull. Some time there is one, sometimes more. At one point I got a "Death Wobble" (steering wheel moving rapidly back and forth). Most times it's just an occasional jerk. It only does it coasting, accelerating or braking will stop it. It was doing it pretty regularly go to the shop this morning. I looked under it for lose parts, both with the wheel at full droop and suspension compressed. Nothing. Bushings don't look great, but not bad either. After jacking it up, I drove it over 30 miles and no jerking.....? Any ideas? Oh yeh, it's an '88 LX, no PS.

    Thanks for looking,

Front to rear play...ball joint or any sway bar bushing.

check up and down on the left inner tie rod.

Since jacking up the car made it go away it I would look closely at the suspension components.
Next time you drive over a bump or pot hole it could come back.
Jumping up and down on the front bumper might do it.

ball joint would be the most likely....although in extreme cases it could be an axle problem, like a cracked race inside the outer boot.

Sway Bar bushings. Been there. Done that. If it's gas pulls to the left, and brake to the right, then it's the passenger side. If it's opposite, it's the drivers side. Good luck!

NO, gas and brake straightens it out. It only did it when coasting.

I couldn't detect any looseness in the ball joints in droop, how do you check for it?

              Thanks everybody,

Stick a pry bar inbetween and reef up on the ball joint. Up and down movement is what ur looking for.

Right on, check anything that has a connection or moves as well.
