Runs then dies

So I have an 89 Festiva L and I've been working on getting it to run again.
We got a new air filter, and fuel pump, and checked/replaced the fuses, but the car won't start most of the time.
When we do get the car running it'll start up for a second or two. It started up for about 2 minutes today, then died.
My friend says it could be the fuel filter, but I'm not sure.
Just wanted to hear everyone's opinion on this problem of mine.

That is carburated right? Sorry, do not remember what year it changed to FI.

If so, I am guessing you have a stuck float and it is flooding out. Get some starting fluid, if spraying it into the carb keeps it running, then you are going lean, if it dies, then you are going rich.

the '89 is the bastard year that has a mishmosh of both styles of parts if it's an AUTOMATIC. if the car is manual, it's carbie and that's a different story. in either case, we need to know what your transmission is FIRST.

ok... now the fun begins. first thing i need you to verify is that there are no holes between the VAF and the TB. this includes cracks in the accordian hose.
next, make sure your VAF pluc is inserted fully and that none of the pins in the VAF are bent.
