Lately my car has been acting up. '88 carby (of course) has been idling at around 200-350 RPM at random. The most unusual part is that the car will take off from a light really sluggishly until it hits 2800 RPM's and then it's like I have a turbo. These two incidences don't necessarily happen simultaneously or in sequence, and I believe may not be related at all. I did have my timing adjusted last year, but I haven't checked it since. I'm due for new spark plugs, and I've got a replacement fuel filter going in soon. Any ideas? Thanks.

I'm no expert and haven't really even seen a carby Festy but i would say it's possible you have some dirt in the carb.
If there is something partially blocking the idle circuit at times then I would think that would cause the low idle RPM.
I don't know what the average RPM is where the carb goes from the idle circuit to the power circuit but I would imagine it's lower than 2800 RPM unless the "dirt" is starving the idle circuit to the point the power circuit takes a second or two to catch up.
I know in the past when I've had a lull in acceleration with a carb taking off from a dead stop It was usually found to be the accelerator pump was bad. However I didn't experience any idle problems as the idle circuit was not affected.
I suppose you could try seafoam in the fuel followed by the filter change.
This is simply "spit balling" on my part.

A carb rebuild kit is around 25 bucks I think. You can replace the accelerator pump without removing the carb. It's on the back. Also spray it out with carb cleaner. If all else fails, mark your hoses, take the carb off and rebuild it. Could also be the ignition control module in the disty. They can be very intermittent.

Look for a disconnected vacuum line. Check the electrical connection to the idle speed compensator, it's a selonoid on the throttle shaft arm.'88 Festiva L, stock carby engine (with exhaust upgrade), 4 speed tranny. Aspire Struts and Springs, Capri 14" wheels, interior gutted, battery in back
