Hmm. I guess. But I wouldnt think you would leave it out for any notable period of time. I dont like the idea of having an open hole at the top of the transmission.

Could have been busted for awhile and he removed and threw it away...by the time he got around to replacing it he didn't remember it's size or color... :???:

The hole you pulled that out you can put your finger in there and feel the gear for cracks.

Yeah, I did that. It felt nice.

Seems like my PO may have been a bit thick... I mean how do you not notice that the part your replacing isnt even close? Especially when it still doesnt work...

Though, I felt inside the trans, and the gear (towards the front of the car from the hole) also felt in tact. Looks like Ill be using my GPS for a speedometer for a while. Haha.

I'm banking on that speedo gear being too short and a proper Stiva gear will do the trick!

Yes, I wasn't saying that the blue speedo gear is correct, just saying that post might clear somethings up since it has the stock gear next to the blue gear.

Judging by that photo too...the blue one would be too short to reach the gear in the tranny thus giving you no Speedo!

Was trying to figure out what Tranny Fluid to put in my car the other day and found this old thread with this post...has the blue speedo gear.

DO NOT take the O ring off the gear...Just take the 10mm headed bolt out, then twist the assembly carefully up and out of the hole, carefully because the small gear on the end of the assembly will want to catch the inner edge of the hole when removing. Now If you find it's not twisting up and out by using your hand, it's ok to start the motion by grasping the metal base of the cable housing with a pair of pliers to get the motion started. You'll want to turn in a clockwise direction so you don't inadvertantly start unscrewing the cable housing off the gear assembly. Most of us do that anyway, but that's because WE have them all lubed up and prepared to be removed, this is not the case for you.
Here are pictures of what the gear assembly looks like from the trans side, your's will look like the long third unit at the bottom of the picture of three:


This is a picture of one with a "section" of the speedo cable still attached.



DO NOT not use a screwdriver to pry up on the "tab" the bolt passes through, because that's how they get broken off by so many cobblers. (you guys know who you are ha, ha)
Then simply fill the trans to within 1.25" or 30mm from the top of the opening, that is the correct fluid level, based on the "Fluid level" mark as indicated on the removed gear assembly.
The amount called for is 2.6 quarts (2.5 liters) of "Mercon atf"

I wonder if the PO replaced the speedo gear with the wrong one...that little gear might not even be reaching far enough down to catch the gears in the tranny..
