  • Carbed Festiva worries me

My festiva (89 L, 4 speed manual) that I am picking up from Toronto next week, I have just found out that it was carbed. We went through this before on this website because they guy assured me it was FI, but i double checked with him yesterday and he said "oh, maybe, dont remember." It was free, and runs well, so you cant go wrong in my opinion. I am really worried about it being carbed though. I have heard they dont perform near the wat FI does. I was planning on putting a B6 FI eventually and now this complicates things. (dont want a carbed B6) How much harder would it be to make FI in the event of an engine swap? Also, can someone just plain old lay out the pros and cons of Carbed. Thanks

Every car I have owned has had a turbo in it, until I bought this latest festiva.. I plan to fix that though.

I would not worry about the carburettor. They were in use for a very long time before fuel injection. I've had no problem with the one on my '89. All the vacuum hoses are holding up great. I spray it inside and out with carb cleaner every once in a while. It passes the Ontario emissions check with flying colours. All I ever did was take off the EGR valve and clean it to bring the NOx reading down, a very easy procedure.

          I don't think so.

While he got better mileage....My '88 Carbed 4-speed, whomped on my cousins '91 FI. I definitely think bone stock that my carbed had more get up then the FI.

i love my carbed 88! sometimes a little hard to start, strange fast idle things, but nothing essentially wrong with it. our family also owns a 90 LX FI and i get 42-46 MPG and the FI gets 40-42. very strange... :?

oh and almost 328K miles is pretty good too!!!
89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

nothin wrong with a carbed festy, my austiva is carb'd mainly cause the only ones out here are only carb'd and the FI versions were never brought out
once you get the car put it in for a tune up and major service then whack in an after market airfilter, set of magnacore plug leads, denso plugs, AC delco shocks and FMS lowering springs and you'll have one mean little machine

thats what mines got and it pulls like a fat kid pushing his way to the front of the lunch line

the carbed festys also weigh in at the least of all the festys... cant go wrong with that... im kind of in the same boat as far as the engine swap goes; im trying to swap in a B8 FI engine into my '89l (carbed) and am trying to figure out what ill need as far as changing it over to FI, i think just an electric fuel pump and maybe something else

I don't drive my carburetted Festiva every day. If I leave it for a week or so I have to pump the gas 4-5 times before turning the engine over. Don't know why. I think the fuel evaporates out of the system somewhere and needs to be "primed". That's the only idiosyncrasy I've noticed in 17 years of driving the beast.

when you pump the throttle 2-3 times it turns on the choke. thats why it will idle high untill you tap the gas then it settles down to normal....
