OK, I am going to take the plunge and do my headgasket and water pump.
Just a few questions before I start, do I need to use a copper spray on the gasket?
Also is it absolutely necessary to have the head surfaced? I need this car fixed yesterday so I can't take anymore downtime.

With my eclipse im using a mls head gasket so both the block and head need to be a mirror finish. This is a high boost engine though (28-32psi) will this engine need at least a resurface on the head? I bout the car with a broken water pump so who knows how bad my festiva was overheated from prior owners, possibly causing the head to warp.
(I know pretty much nothing about n/a, pretty sure I already know the answer to this but I want opinions)

Ok so got the upper timing cover off anddddddd, the water pump is fine. So my water leak is from the crank pully sera after all, so im lost.

So far I have removed: air filter box, upper timing belt cover, water pump pully, crank/alternator/water pump belt.

I cannot get the crankshaft pully off, I have removed the 4 10mm bolts, and the silver spacer thing, do I need to remove the big bolt in the center of the pully?

there are 2 philipshead screws you're missing???

as far as your other questions; copper spray isnt nessisary, but definately a good idea. the head may not need planed, but you won't know that till it comes off and you take a straight edge to it.

also, there is no coolent below the waterpump housing in the block, so i'd bet the gasket is shot.

Yeah im missing those, my a/c compressor was removed and the lines all hacked by the previous onwer, so they took the crankshaft accessory pully off and never replaced the screw. Not a big deal.

          The seal on my WP?

If I fill my radiator water will literally stream out of the 6 o'clock position of my crankshaft seal. Maybe my block is cracked or something.

Timing belt sprocket bolt (in the middle of the crankshaft pully), I don't know the size (help?) but I sure don't have a wrench that big, im about to take my grinder to the inside of my wheel well for easy access to the timing area of my engine.

Yes, the big bolt needs to come out to remove the crankshaft pulley.

You need to loosen the pass. side motor mount to lower the motor on that side. This will give you better access to that bolt. IIRC it's 22mm, but not 100% sure.

I stuck a new HG in my B6 last year without shaving the cylinder head. According to my straight edge, it was warped. But no problems. I just followed FestyBoy's advice: used copper-coat and torqued it down, and it seems fine.

Ok got the bolt out, removed the pully and the water leak was coming from the lower part of my water pump, the pump is good bit I already got a new one so ill be putting that in.
I unplugged the sensors and hoses, vacuum lines and unbolted the head.
Im keeping the intake manifold on because it looks like a pain to remove on the car.

Iv almost got the head off but its snagged one something, ill figure it out when im done taking a brake.

Its just awesome how easy these cars are to work on! I have never done anything engine related and its fairly straight forward.

I imagine you got it, but don't forget the bracket going securing the intake manifold to the engine block.

That was it, and a heater hose. The head is off and my head gasket was torn up bad. My oil pan was filled with about a quart of water.

Going to have the head resurfaced, and run over the block with some 800-1200water grit sand paper to remove any grime.

Pictures of my block before I cleaned it up, and after, and my cylinder head. You can clearly see how bad my gasket was, nearly the whole exhaust side was toast! Will post another picture after it gets resurfaced.

Personally, I wouldn't rub the internals of my motor with anything that has little rocks on it [sandpaper]. I would go with careful scraping.

Do you mean the pistons or? I only did the mating surface of the block.

Well, any little stone from the paper that gets down into the cylinder [gravity is not your friend here] between the piston and the cylinder wall is going to cut a vertical groove that the rings can't seal, costing you a bit of compression. This is just something I heard from hot rodders a long time ago and it make sense to me. I put a strip of tape around the inside of the cylinder so the sticky side sticks up over the edge a 1/2" or so.

Ohh ok, yeah I was smart about it and lined the walls with paper towels and filled to with oil to catch anything.
